Impressions of a Recent Visit - The McKenna Monument It is good to see God’s acre beautiful because of the reverence we should fee! for the consecrated greuad in which he a!) that remaios of thore loved on earth ; it is good to ste the spot that should be dedicated to meditation, to prayer, to re collection and to hope besutiful through the tenderness which faith generates in our hearts. It is true that monuments and flowers do not make the dead rest more peacetully;on the dav of resurrection the monument, whether a dome of granite or a mound of earth, will be as nothing. Yet, in common decency, we should care for the graves of that glorious army who died fortifled by the sacraments, who will rise again our brothers ip the love of Jeeus Christ. As we walk through it we feel the presence of that power before which prince and peasant mvat bow down, and as we read the inscriptions on the magnificent monuments with which it is filled weseemto realize that our faith still binds the living and the dead with golden chains sroand the feet of God, that we ourselves shall pass away and sleep with them beneath the sad, we know not how, or when, or where; and as we think cf what will be we can but say Leaves have their time to fall, And flowers to wither at the norih wind’s breath, And stars to set—but all, Thou bast all seasons for thine own, O, Death. A splendid celtic cross monument has just been erected there by} Mr, Francis McKenna to the memory of his sister Catherine. It stands £4 feet high, and is buil: of Barrie dark granite beautifully polished and exquisitely interlaced and carved with rare 6ld celtic ornamentation. The front, back, sides and wheel bear the symbole of the Catholic faith. Eternity without beginning and without end, the four evangelists, the eight beatitudes and the adorable Triaity are represented, cut deep into the stone and polished, the back ground being left uptoucbed so as to give sufficient shadow to throw out the§ornamentation. The name “F. McKenna, ” inthe panel in the front and back of the second base, is in 5- inch letters raieed three-eighths of an inch from back of panel. The surfaces polish- ed, the back ground is leftto represent light cut work ivscription of the late Catherine McKenna, sunk in gothic block lettere, gilded in a firat-¢lass manner. The stem of the cross diminishes ou the front, back and sides from1 foot 2 inches square at the bottom to 10 inches at tne centre line of wheel. It is certainly tbe most elaborate piece of granite work ever done in this country, aad reflects credit on Mr. E. J. Duffy, who desigaed it, and on Mr. Robert Reid, of Montreal, by whom it was execuied, Take a walk through our cemetery. The names of chose you perbaps knew avd loved, emblazoned in every shade, aid relief aud color, are around you to teil! who sleeps beneath. Here are the graves of the rich and poor, the young and old; here astroug man is weeping ash- reads an epitaph, there a loving friend is placing & wreath of flowers, whiie just around this tomb a little girl is lost im tearful prayer over her mother’s grave. Around you are the ensigns of faith—crosses, hearts aud anchors, texts of scripture, couplets of poetry, words expressive of endearmeni, bereavement and sympathy, and high above all stands this magnificentt Celtic cross bearing the symbois of our faith and creed. [love to walk through our “City of the Dead,” the‘silent resting place of the judged of God, where the crores stands at every mound, where the moon-beams brightly f ll like faith con- quering doubt, where ever and anon, as the breeze sweeps by making wistful melody the voices of the dead seem speak ing golden truths or begging the charity of our ferven:; prayers. Yes, I love to walk through thatsilent city, and medi tate On what was, what is, and what is to be ; and when I wake from my reverie | feel myself a_better Christian, loving all the more Him who ‘said, “I am the resurrection and the life,” and craving al! the more trustfully for light perpet ial for the souls of the faithful departed, X. Montreal, July 9.—The list of those who have received benefit from the great medicine, Dodd’s Kidney Pills, is steadily growing in the city. Since Mr. Robert Thomeon’s name was published, Mr. M. Mulin, of 4 Eigin Street, has stepped for- ward and submitted his testimony. His case was Rheumatism which though vow generally recognized as a kidney disease is not always treated as such. People waste a lot of money trying to drive Rheumatism from the system. If they would all follow Mr. Mulin’s example they would be saved much pain and ex- se. Says he : ‘‘I have had Rheumatism for some time and could get nothing tv cure me until I used Dodd’s Kidney Pills, I have now taken three boxes and am cured,” “~ ; Ss ed bef ~ Noricr.—Dr. Dickey’s officewill be open in the evening from 7 till 8 o Clock bleed Temperance. —Victoria Division S of PT. meets every Monday at 8 p. m.
