Jupiter is by far the largest of the
planets, exceeding both in bulk and
mass all the others combined.
'l‘lie satellites; or tour moons. of Jit-
piter enjoy the 'distinction ol being
the first objects ever discovered with
the telescope, having been found by
Galileo almost immediately after its
invention, A. Di 1610. lt is quite pos-
sible that they also have been seen
with the naked eye before this-time.
In more recent years reports are cur-
rent that they have been seen under
favorable circumstances by sharp-eyed
ersonii, and very little telescope aid
li; required to show them. in recent
years a considerable number of other
fainter satellites have been been found
attending Jupiter.
In respect to size and moss Saturn
stands next to Jupiter. and. although
far inferior to him in these respects.
it contains more material than all the
remaining planets combined. But the
unique feature of Saturn which dis-
tinguishes it from every other known
body in the heavens is its ring. This
was a long puzzle to the astronomers
who iirst studied the planet with a
telescope. One of them called Saturn
a pl_a_net~witii ears. As correctly un-
derstood abd' described nearly half a
century after. however, "it is sur-
rounded' by a ring, thin, dat, nowhere
touching it. and making quite an
angle with the ecliptic." ' Sometimes
Saturn is observed without a trace of
the ring. as it is so thin that is dis-
appears altogether when turned edge-
wise.”
Saturn ia attended by ii family ot’
nine satellites. ii larger number than
belongs to any other planet. With one
exception, they are exceedingly small
and difiiciilt to observe save with a
very large telescope. The latest ones
to be discovered were found by means
of tha. image which they lnmpressed
upon mphotographic plate. They have
never really been "seen_"
