Trumps and hobos were the prevailing effects produced. They were varied by Dames from the 11th century, milk-maids, Clndere'1lss,cow- boys, etc., all of which together made a. very pleasing scene. A not-` iceable pair were two red cross nur- ses who skated together, and who were much admired in their role. They furnished a very pleasing con- trast to tTle ridiculous numbers. There were also numerous other cos- tumes which were very nice indeed. A great interest was taken in the carnival by the people around, and the building was crovl'f.ed. One man who wanted to take part in the func- tion, and who could not skate went in “Nell Dunpliy" costume and masqueraded around the promenade. The writer does not know who he was but suspects him of being a serious-minded dealer in merchandise. He_ had a very interesting converse-` tion with the door-keeper with refer- ence to getting in and out of the building without having to .pay more than one. entrance fee. The odlcial was trying bard try identify the party, but the fact that be had a femine accent coupled with ex- tremely masculine ieet, made identl~ flcati.!.l a mater of agrsat dlili- culty. Mr. .Harry Francis of Fortune took the place by storm in a beauti- ful costume impersonating "The Lady of My Dracula." Another char- acter costume was tllat of a matron. This object dressed in a wrapper, and picture hat. She (?; came out on the ice, with little minoing steps, the long wrapper trailing gracefully behind. When she came to the ilrst corner however, in- striding around with a little hop which was the first exposing peculiarity' noticed bv 011- lookers, she (7) tramped on her skirt and tore it badly, showing up a pair of very large feet. She endeav- ored to cover these up by stooping, but "murder will out," and as this posture was not conducive to good balance, she was obliged to unbend, and thus by the size of the above- mentioned extremities proclaimed his sex. The hat worn was a picture ln- deed. In it were all colors of the rainbow, and on it were feathers out of tvery bird, ranging from the lordly peacock to the goose. It is thought bv some that he was try‘l1l8 to represent this latter useful,, though ungainly member of the farmyard dock. At any rate his antics were characteristic. Worthy of notion also were two _young lalllol dressed as the "Queen o Hearts and Diamonds." Tlloir clstumes were much admired by spectators--U. EISTEIIII PEIISOIIILS ...°Mr. L. R. My experience as a member of the Fire Department for the past twenty years enables me to speak with authority on the requirements of the city in this connection, and I re- cognize the necessity of keeping the department up to the highest possible standard of efficiency consistent with econo- my. The question of improving the condition of our streets will receive my best attention. While a great deal is being done towards improving these, much still remains to be done. I would make it part of my duty to see tllat the streets in ward 3, especially the side streets, receive a fair share of the expenditure for this purpose. I have always considered that Charlottetown ought to be one of the foremost cities in Canada and my aim shall be, if elected, to do everything in my power to make it so. Any electors who may desire to have further particulars as to my views on public matters I shall be glad to confer with at my place of business or bylappointment otherwise. I am, yours obedienti R. B. EATTRAY ‘ ` 1 luxe? To Civic Electors of Ward 5: Ladies and Gentlemen: lat the request oi several delega- tions, and in response to your large ly signed requisition, and as I was nominated at a large meeting of the electors ol this ward. in my absence, I now am in your hands as a condi- datc for councillor, for this most .important ward, at the forthcoming civic election. Although I did not seek the nomination, I am deeply sensible of the very warm express- ions of good-will toward me that I have received from the electorain all parts of the ward. As the civic elec- tions are by ballore, I hold that it would therefore be inconsistent for me to make a personal canvass; the very meaning of ballot is that the voter should enioy the right of free- ly expressing his opinion at the polls without fear, favor, ur ailection. The choice should 'be yours to elect whom, you please, and should I bs elected will make but one promise only, namely, to serve your interests to the very best of my ability. 1914 ia likely to be one of the most import-` ant yours in the history oi this Gar- den Province, and it behoovcs all of us tu be alive to this fact and to see that the capital city is governed ab- ly and wisely, ever keeping in view all possible progress consistent with due economy. To the Electors of Ward One: LADIES AND GENTLEMEN2- At the solicitation of a largely re- presentative delegation of voters oi the Ward, I have consented to their request und oiler myself as a candi- date ior Councilman at the forth- coming civic election. I am of the belief, 'with the great malority of the Ward that the Coun- cilman-eiect should be a resident of the Ward he represents and thereby in touch with its requirements. 1 am for economy in the various civic departments, whilst not ndect# ing civic Improvements. but am op- osed to any innovation that will un- necessarily increase the tuxcs of citi- zens vlltbout first consulting my sup- porters. 1 am in favor oi cheaper water and more light along the approaches to the city which I claim has been ne- glected in the past, and that some of the taxes collected in the Ward be spent therein; also oi better protec- tion. Ladies and gentlemen electors, I may say the time is too abort to call on you all personally, so 1 take this mesna nl soliciting your support; and if you du me the nouor oi electing me to the Council, I will endeavor tn serve the best interests of the Ward and City.
