A trial of potato diggers took place in the field of Captain Aylward, Southport, on Tuesday, Oct. 16th, at two o'clock, in the presence of a large number of influential farmers from different farms of Queen's County. McKenzie’s potato digger, which took second money at the St. John Domi- nion Exhibition, was the first to enter the field. He was followed by what is termed Ainsley’s machine, a New York invention, for which Dover and Robertson, of this city, are agents. Next came Lane’s potato digger, called Common Sense, and lastly Robert Smallwood’s machine. The work- ing of these machines in the field was clogely watched, and every opportunity was afforded intending purchasers to judge for themselves as to the most practical and best machine. This was not, however, a difficult task, as McKenzie’s machine was admitted by all to have performed by far the best work. The fullowing is the report of the judges who acted on the occasion :— Sovrarort, Lor 48, October 16, 1883. We, the undersigned, appointed to witness a practical test of Potato Diggers, have to report that Mr. McKenzie's Potato Digger, in- vented by himself and patented, performed by far the best work of any other machine in the fieid. ; (Judges) Wa. J. Fraser, Charlottetown, Ricwarp Wise, Milton, Frep’k. Horse, Winsloe Road, Broce Leitcs, Stanhope, Ws. Morten, Hopeton, Lot 48, Ricwarp Jexxins, Pownal, The following is the Judge’s decision of a trial of potato diggers, between Mr. Lane’s ‘Common Sense,” and Mr. McLeod’s ‘Beater Digger’ :— Time occupied in digging ten drills by Mr Lane, forty four minutes. 3 Time occupied by Mr. McLeod in digging ten drills, forty-five minutes. : A certain piece of ground {was examined after the elk was completed. Double the quantity of potatoes was found after the **Common Sense.” After an examination of the potatoes when dug, we find the potatoes to be injured fifty cent. more after Mr. McLeod's “Beater igger.” than after Mr. Lane’s “Common Sense.” gs We observe that Mr, Lane’s ‘Common Gense” is considerable lighter of draft than Mr. McLeod's ‘Beater Digger.” (Judges) Arex.
