As a. matter of fact, East could have made at least. four notrump, worth 630 points, and so South could pay a penalty of three tricks, 500 points, and earn an excellent match-point score. Un- fortunately, however, he went fiOWn 700! West opened a heart and South let East win the trick, East cashed his three trumps and played another heart, South woli, laid down the spade n68 and led. another spade. West took the trick and led n third round of hearts. South soon found that he could not establish his long spades, umi the upshot was that he took only one top spade, one heart, a heart ruff in dummy and and two of his own diamonds, which left him four tricks short of the contract. Observe what an important difference it would have made l1 South, after getting on lead with the heart ace, had lcd a low spade from his hand! West might as well put up the spade queen and play another heart. Dummy would ruff, and. now the remaining spade would be led from dummy through East's king-jack-sevcn. If he fail- ed to “split his honors,” South's correct play would be simply to put in the nine-spot; the south 8 p.m. would cash the ace and give East a spade trick, setting up his own fifth card in the suit. N0 one likes s bully, Buster Bear was a bully. Like all bullies he hnci a 800d opinion of himself. Because he was so big, and he really was big, and so strong, he boasted tlllll 11B W55 airnld of no one. Boosting made him feel lurch more important than he really was until at. last he fooled himself into really believ- ing that. what he claimed was true. Boasting does that to folks. They fool themselves more than they do others. . Then one day he learned how very wrong he was; that there were folks with whom his great size and his great. strength didn't count; folks who had no respect whatever for him, and who dared to tell him so. He had wandered into that part of the Green Forest where Chatterer the Red Squirrel and Mrs. Chatterer were living. He didn't know this until Chat- terers sharp voice began u, tell all the neighbors what his opin- ion of Buster Bear was. It wasn't at all a good opinion. Chatterer was clinging head down to the trunk of s. tree as few but Squir- rels can. He was telling Buster Benr just what he thought of him, and he was doing it in a voice that all the neighbors could hear. He was calling Buster unkind names, which. of course, he shouldn't. have been doing. Ceiling folks unkind names never docs any good and often does n lot of harm. “swelled head! Swelled head! Buster Bear has s. swelled heed. He thinks everybody is afraid o! him, but I'm not," shrieked Chat- terer, jerking his tall with every word and sometimes in between words.
