Hngland and Hgypt. A still further reduction has been ordered in the number of English troops in Egypt, and it is probable that before the end ofthe year not more than 3,000 or 4,000 British troops will be left in that country. But notwith- standing this fact, it is not at all clear the British will withdraw entirely from Egypt immediately, or even in the course of a few months, as has been supposed. While Mr, Gladstore is vo doubt desirous of carrying out his pledges with regard to Egypt, and to withdraw the British forces entirely as soon as it can be done with safety, he is probably of opinion that the time has not yet arrived when such a course 18 | feasible, Sis Evelyn Wood, who is in| command there, is understood to be| opposedf:o the immediate withdrawal of tho British troops, and his advice will doubtless have much weight with the Goverament. British interests in Egypt must be protected ; if this can be done by the Egyptian Government without British assistance it will be well, but if not, thea a portion of the army mustremain in Egypt until the Government of that country stands on & secure basis. M, Loyson (better knownas Pere Hyacinthe), in taking leave of his con— gregation in Paris, prior to his tour of gix months in America, said: “In my life I have passed through many cruel trials, but I had the good fortune to be brought up by Christian relatives and masters. I believe in Christianity and in Catholicism. I am asincere be- liever in the French form of Christian- ity as I was when I occupied the pulpit of Netre Dame, and when I was an in- mate of the Seminary of St. Suipice. 1 believe in Jesus Christ, who was a man like myself, and God, like his Father,,” M. Loyson said he was opposed to all compromise with relationism, and to all submission to superstition. He be- lieved that his teaching was the nega- tion of superstition and fanaticism, and stigmatised Ultramontanism as “the most odious counterfeit of Catholicism,” In concluding his address, be said that he would try to return before the ex- piraticu of the next six months, in order to witness “the events, beneficent or terrible—perbaps at once terrible and benetficent—which will then burst upon France and Europe.” The formation of a Citizen’s Gas Company in Montreal has brought the old Gas Company down to reasonable rates. It is proposed for the City Council to make a new contract with the old Gas Company, which they are wil- ling to ante for ten years, charging $1,50 per M. cubic feet for lighting during the first five years of the con- tract, and $1,40 during the last five years. For cooking and heating pur- poses only $1 will be charged, A ietter of Darwin has recently been published in which he said: “It seems to me absurd to doubt that aman may bean ardent theist and evolutionist. You are right about Fingsley. Asa Gray, the eminent botanist, is another case in point. In my most extieme fluctuations I have never been an atheist in the sense of denying the ex- istance of a God.” Butler goes out, and Robinson comes in. What does the prim old State let lose or win?
