Such a ‘state of things was io- taily out of tune with the trend of the age. (Is that a mixed metaphor? Well, you'll have to put up with itl). ‘As I grew to manhood, I noticed that among the "weil-to-do" clam there were apparently no downright drunk- ards such as I had seen in my Always curious about our ns- tional customs I enquired the rea- son of this and got several theories in reply. Some supposed English- men were “becoming immune"; others that the liquor was purer and not so poisonous as formerly; that men were taking to "dram- drinking" instead of throwing a wild debauch as formerly; but I think the best answer was that society was frowning down the practice. That was, of course. the result of temperance education. There was at the same time a good deal of hard-drinking amongst the through a law whereby a. "land- iord", operating a tavern, was liq.- bls to have his license taken sway if he sold drink to a. man who was in any of the stages of in- wxication. So it fell out that a drouthy individual, on going to the bar for a solatium, was always the ranch and found Roy busy with a couple of customers. November 6th, the day follow-flag the completion of the silver fox show. Six prominent silver fox breeders have rented the fox show room at the Exhibition Building, Charlottetown, for that date andl will hold an auction of registercdi silver foxes beginning at 1.30 p.m.' The animals will be on exhibition in the show crates from ten o'clock in the morning. It seems to the writer that this offers an excellent opportunity for breeders, particularly the smal- Cass and Bell officiating. Super- intendent Gordon MacMillan will allot the fox crate positions, while Secretary Walter Show will be here, there and everywhere. By seven or eight o'clock p.m. st the latest. everything will be clear- ed awsy and order once more re- stored and the foxes settled down for a quiet evening in their new surroundings. As s matter of fact, it is wonderful how quickly they accustom themselves to such s. rsdlesl change.
