There are three lessons I would write- Three words as with a burning pen— In tracings of eternal light, Upon the hearts of men. Have Hore. Though clouis environ now, And g!adness hides her face in scorn, Put thou the shadow from thy brow ; No night but hath its morn. Have Fairu. Where e’er thy bark is drive The calm’s disport, the tempest’s mirth— Know this: God rules the host of heaven, The inhabitants of earth. Have Love ; and not alone for one, But man as man, thy brother call ; And scatter like the circling sun, Thy charities on all. Engrave these lessons on thy soul— Hope, Faith and Love—and thou shalt fad Strength where life's surges rudest roll, Light where thou else were blind. - — & GIVE. Give, as God hath given thee, With a bounty full and free; if He hath with liberal hand Givea wealth to thy command, From the fulness of thy store Give thy needy brother more. If the lot his love doth give, Is by earnest toil to live; If with nerve and sinew strong Thon dost labor hard and long,— Then e’em from thy slender store Give! and God shall give thee more ~ Good Times --. —oe «« « Explosion at Stellarton. Srectitarron, Dec 16.— There was another explosien inthe Cage Pit last evening, the flames from whieh almost reached the pit head. Men were ems pleyed daring yesterday putting earth and rubbish dewn the shaft, a large pertion of which was blown in the air with the ferce of the explosion. An engine has been placed in a small pond pear by, and water is being forced down the shafi to prevent the flames getting the mastery, and save the buildings and machine:y around the pit, as weil as a number ef miner’s houses in close prox- imity tothe works. Much fear is en- tertainec to-day lest the devouring element of destruction, so near the sur- face, should gain headway. The feel- iags of these inthe vicinity may be imagine, as the smoke after the blast settied down so thickly upon them that they cou'd notisee each other. All is quiet just new, but many fear further explosions “during the night. Teday was pay day, netable enly for its great stillness, and the absence of any money circulation, no work ef any consequence boing done during the last month. It is said that feurteen theusand dollars less money was paid from the Com- pany's ottiee to-day than last reckoning. This is x very serious falling off, and tells heavily upon the business come munity. The whole country will feel the depression which this state of mat- ters will eventuaily bring about. The London * Land and Water”’ of November 27 says:— “Mr. Edwin Beoth has, as Richelieu, redeemed the reputation that his Hamlet had well nigh ferfeited. For there is in the arts, or at least should exist, such a thing as international courtesy. Year after year America steels away eur best actors and aliketapplauds and retains them. So Iam glad to see that England appres ciates an artist who is pessessed of such rare talents, cultivated with such con. summate skill as Mr. Edwin Booth. I only wish that many of our younger actors would go and hear him roll out his lines without effort and affectation, and with splendid effect.” An interesting relict of Charles Lamb was lately seld in London. This cone sisted of a portrait ef the essayist by his friend Haxlitt. Originally in the poss session of S. T. Coleridge, the portrait industry was s0 important to the wel- fare of the country as the valuable works of the Halifax Company, but which new unfortuvately are laid waste for «a len,z time tecome. Men are em- ployed opening a trial slope on a seam not previously worked, knewn as the qregery seam. Should this prove successful and the ceal suit for cokeing, it will farnish work fera few mea during the water. The work ef clear- iag out the Foord Pit shaft is being still carried on, but itis net known how} long it will be continued. ~ _——_ The December moen is an important member ef the planetary fraternity. There are two new meens, one on the Ist and one on the 3let. On both ec- easions, 1s the moon passes between the sun and the earth, her path lies so nears ly in the plane of our orbit that she! eauses partial eclipses ot the sun. She is, therefore, the cause of our having two sola: eclipses in one month. The eclipse of the Ist is invisible in the United States. That of the 3lst is artially visible. The sun will rise eclipsed and the eclipse will end soon after nine o'clock, a little mere that seven-terths of the sun’s disc being hidden at the time of its greatest ebscur- ity; the last morning of the year will therefore bea dark one. The moon fulls on the 16th and passes near Uranus on the 2rd. The waning moon on the morning of the 2th passes within twenty=seven minutes of Mars and on the 30th within thirteen minutes of Mercury. Revo..t.—Th» details of the attempt at revolt ef Cuban negrees, aided by alleged reinforcement from Central, have been received from Havana. Two hundred and seventystive mulattees and negroes were seized in fourteen towns and villages and conveyed and escorted to Santiage, where they embarked on the frigate Almausa. Arms and ammu. nition were seized, with papers that re- vealed the date fixed a dame for the wholesale burning of plantations. The leaders have been exocuted. The rest will be transported to Fernando, south passed at his death into the hands of Mrs. Gillman, from whom it was pur- chased by the late Mr. Edward Moxon, Started at $50 the portrait was ultim- ately sold for $200.
