The announcement was made not long ago that Dr. Gaylord of the State Labora- tory of Budalo had discovered the micro- organism which is the cause of cancer. If true, nothing could well exceed the lm- portance of the discovery, as we might then expecb that the discovery of an effect- ual autitoxin or remedy of some sort would follow. No other disease is so much dreaded, and it is a painful fact that ii: is steadily increasing its _ravages in almost every civilized country. Apart f.rom this the laboratory of Buffalo hascollected some curious statis- tics bearing upon this malignant malad y. For instance in t-he years from 1880 to 1899 the.death-rate from cancer increased from 35 to 53 per 100,000. This is an alarm- ing rate of increase for nineteen years, although the larger dgures are but one- dfth to one-fourth of the total death-rate from all causes. But a. more curious feature of the statistics is found in the fact that in Butfa.lo42per cent of the deaths from _cancer were among the Germans and the population, while only 29 per cent. of .the cancer mortality was among native- born Americans, who make up 65 per cent. of the total population of the City. The statisticsshow, further, that cancer ofthe stomach is more than twice as frequent among the Germans and Poles in Budalo as among the native-born. These facts would go to show that diet is pro- bably a factor producing or developing . this malady. The German is 3 beer drinker notorious- ly, and a. large but leisurely eater. It can hardly be established that in the matter of eating the German abuses his stomach so much as the American, who often eats in haste, bolts his food, and suEers from dyspepsia. in consequence. But cancer has not followed in the wake of dyspepsia. A Two Americans have dyspepsia ti; every one German in a population equally divided between the two races. It. me y yet. be found that the germs of the disease are frequently carried into the system by some articles of drink or food which Ger- mans use more largely than others. ~ If we seek for articles which the Ger- manpeople in America distinctly use more largely than other peoples the llrst thought will be of beer among drinks and cabbage among vegetable foods. It is notorious that the use of malt liquors, always large in Germany, has extended enormously in England and the United States within the past twenty years. The extension of beer drinking has been coin- cident withthe rapid increase of cancer. It does not necessarily follow from this that the drink is the cause of the disease, but the fact appears clear that in Buffalo , Q n umbagi is Rheuruatlsm ofthsback _ The cause is Ui-ie Acid ‘ inthe blood. If the kid- ) ~ neys didthelr work then. wepld be no Ul'5¢'A¢_i.d Ind no Lumbago. Make the sure, positive and only _ _ cure for Lumhegols' E Poles, Who constitute only 20 per cent. of _ ~ , . the beer drinking,cabhage-eating German is more alilioted with cancer than men of other races. -_-4---- . Montreal last year had a revenue of $3,157,614, of which $2,871,277 was derived from taxes. The balance came from _var- ious sources, the ci ty°s share of the street raliwa.y’s enrningi being the largest single item. The railway paid' the city $77,889. __._.;__ Mr. H. Bence-Jones, of the Royal Statis- ical Society has published in th-e jour uals of the Society for 1900 the statement that the consumption of intoxicating liquors iuCi.nada i~i smaller per head than in any other country for which statistics exist. All ot is creditable to Canada. And P. E. Island is the one Province of the Domin- ion in which the consumption is small- est. Woeste, asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs if the Belgian government had not, in the year 1895 received a secret warning to prepare her frontiers, garrisons 1 and fortresses to meet the contingency of a war between France and Germany which was at the time deemed inevitable. The Minister, M. de Faverau. replying to ‘this very pointed question, said that in the in- terest of friendly international relations he must decline to make any specific ans- wer, and must refuse to publish the dip- lomatic correspondence with either of the powers mentioned, but he added this signihcant remark: “The chamber will understand my reserve; and I am not a little astonished at the honorable mein- ber’s persistence." t Th omau who puts ehzr head in T" ` the lion’s mouth, ~ Seems the type of _ P* reckless women.
