Ladies are winning their way to the frent in Belgium as in other countries, and the University of Brussels has for the first time admitted a lady asa science student. A REAL NOBLE MAN. Lord Aberdeen has remitted half a year's rent to his Scetch tenantry. This princely present means a loss to the Earl of £21,000. He hxc had te abanden his plan of extend- ing the railways on his estate. LORD ORAMMORE resigned his position as Vice-President ef the Chure): Association, after making a vig- ereus protest against the action of the Council in the Mackonochie case in coin- mencing a new suit instead of simply ap- ylying to the Court to refuse its deeree. le considered it abselutely wrong to waste the funds for an absolutely useless end. The proceedings had already extended over twelve years, and had cost about £1,200, and the only result of the course now taken would be centinued litigation. Fou AND FOGGY. Who was the eminent jeurnalist who, returning, er rather trying to return, home in the marvelleus black fog on the opening night at the new Haymarket Theatre, eftered hiraself to a policeman in Trafalgar- square as ‘‘positively the man whe com- mitted the Burton-crescent murder; no mistake this time ?. He was, I am told, a wervous creature, and had conceived this happy thought as yielding a last chance of finding his way semewhere, and being taken care of until Monday morning. No luck, however, ‘‘ Won't do!” replied the intelligent officer. ‘‘You're the fifteenth te night. CAUTION TO CATTLE RAISERS. A very unusual case came before the Lord Chief Justice at Warwick on Thurs- day. A gentleman farmer by the name of Hopkins was indicted for obtaining a £20) prize for a shorthorn hull by felse pre- tences at the Birmingham Christmas Show. The accused furnished a pedigree of his bull, which obtained the first prize, trac- ing it to the required herd boek sires ; but it was proved to be false. The jury found against the prisoner, and the Lord Chief Justice senienced him to three months’ im- prisonment, with hard laber. COURTLY. The Marshal ot Ceremonies to the Reyal Hovsehol:! has been sued by his tailor ter £296 fer» uniform. Mr. Lumley is a most reoable gentleman, who possesses the art ef walkin backwards with a caudle in each hand without spilling the grease over his own tronsers better than any man in Europe. Mr. Lumley, however, appears | te receive nothing a year for leading royal cotillons and putting serene highnesses right when they get fogged in the mazes of the Lancers. This is hard upon him, and ought te be looked to while a Tory Ministry is still in office. But all the more reason fer not being evercharged. Mr. Lumley knocked £75 olf his tailor’s bill, wherewith 1 congratulate this Solomon in ali his glory—including the wisdom. A quantity of falso hair will be worn at the forthcoming drawing-rooms, owing to the Queen’s express command that three plumes shall spring conspicuously frem the heads of all the ladies who are to approach her Ast is impossible teplant these in the elosely braided hair which the better taste ef the times las generally adopted, every lady ambitious of appearing at Buckinham Palace has set her hairdresser to work to match her trosses. SPIRITS AND BBER IN POLITICS. The pnblicans appear to be playing a dangerous game. They enjoy a monopoly, and if, irrespective of political considera tions, they throw in their let with the Conservatives, they must not be surprised if the Liberals, as soon as they have the power, putan end to an influence that is organized against them. ‘This may be ef- fected not only by the local option of Sir Wilfrid Lawson, but by throwing the liquor trads epen and allowing every one to sell beer and spirits like any other article of ¢ensumption. UNEASY HEADS OF THE PEOPLE. If any of our readers ever had an in- sane ambition to be emperors and empress: | es, | sheld imagine it was extinct by this! time. Four attempts within a few months ;! and such attempts ! What a life! To feel no safety anywhere. not even in one’s own house, with hundreds of guards within call ! To know that many amorg the inhabitants ef the house, possibly among the highest thinking any risk as of little account in cemparison with the death in life which they and their nation lead! I fancy that the Socialists will ero long gain one of ' their ends, and that the present Tsar, un- able to bear it farther, will abdicate and resign it to his son. Whether their caleu- lation cf more freedom then will be gratified remains to be seon. It It will be a case of scorpions against whips, but deperate men will net be deterred by that. Again : King Theebaw, of Burmah, has suffered from-two attempts upon his life} within a month. The last one was or-| ganized by his mother-in-law, who poisoned some sweemeats intended for the royal table. During the meal a crow invaded the king's verandah, and Theebaw flung ene of the sweetmeats at the intruder, which swallowed the missle, and imme- diately fell down dead. His suspicions heing areused, the King threw out a quan- tity of the sweets to the crows in the nvighborheod, whieh ate them greedily and died on the spot; so his Burmese Majesty, eu making inquiries, at once sent his affec- tionate relative to prison. > ~~ om. + .- Secretary Sherman has accepted the Re- publican, nomination, in Ohio, for Preeid- ent. << Ce a I | _ SMOKED, sugar cured beef, ham and bacon, just cured and for sale at Hall’s Market, MINIATURE ALMANAC, WEDNESDAY..... ......- APRIL 7, 1880. The course of Instruction is the same as that of the best Scheols in England and is founded upon the University Examinations for Women. Eight young ladies from this School passed the Local Examination of the University of King’s College in June last. This is the only School in Canada that has passed pupils at a University Examination. The number of pupils is limited, rendering the School select, and while it possesses all the educational advantages of a large public school, each pupil is enabled to receive that individual care and oversight which 1s s0 important, and which cannot be given ina large establish- ment, Mr. and Mrs. Padfield are assisted by a staff of four resident governesses, besides visit- ing masters.
