May 27, 1879.-—-pre Sin 2aw Tue crew of laboring men who formerly discharged and loaded the Boston boats in this eity, struck work, on arrival of the “Carroll” to-day, for higher wages. They demanded 15 cents per hour for boys and 20 cents per hour for men, instead of 10 and 15 cents, as heretc- fore. The agents refused to accede to the demand, and immediately hired a new crew, who are now discharging the ‘‘Carroll.’ Tue steamer ‘‘ Carroll” arrived from Boston this afternoon, with a cargo of merchandize and the following passengers: Mrs. A. [may27 3in A number of prisoners who were recently arrested and remanded for committing most brutal assaults, appeared to-day at the Sti- pendiary Magistrates Court, and owing to the unwillingness or disability of those whom they assalted, to prosecute them, they were <is- charged, and thier discharge is looked upon as a complete failure of justice. Francis McAtee appeared on charge of assaulting Peter Me- Carey, on Black Sam’s Bridge, on Sunday morning, the 18th inst. McCarey was badly hurt but this morning he withdrew. the mat- ter and agreed to settle it mutually with his assailant. John McCabe who assaulted James Dooling, appeared at the bar. Dooling would not appear for the prosecution and McCabe went unpunished. Francis Coyle was charged with brutally assaulting a sailor named Nicholas, on King Street, a short time ago. A few days after the assault, Nicholas left the city, and Coyle—if guilty—goes unpunished also. James Henesssey, junr., was arrested for disorderly conduct on the Street. The ‘‘ Times” article says that great care is taken not to imperil Yakoob Khan’s posi- tion by demands which might excite the jealousy of his subjects. Great Britain de- mands na war indemnity. Khyber and Mechni Pass, which she annexes, run through the territory of independent tribes. In the assigned districts England will have aright to iocate troops wherever she con- siders it necessary and to construct military highways. The Ameer will act in subor- dination to the British relative to foreign relations and affairs with intermediate fron- tier tribes, A British resident at Cabul will forthwith be appeinted. The treaty will give Great Britain the right to appoint residents at Herat, Candabar, and other cities, but this right is not at present availed of. TURKEY AND GREECE. CONSTANTINOPLE, May 24, The Porte has informed its representatives abroad that Greek Brigands recently ambus- caded 46 Turkish soldiers in a forest, in the district of Tirkala, and killed 14. The soldiers cut their bodies in pieces and hung pieces on trees. It is reported that Greece is preparing to mobilize 30,000 men and that she has sent officers to the United States to purchase two iron clads, The Turkish force concentrated in Northern Macedonia comprises 35 batallions.
