Mr. Alex. Martin ex M. P. gave a stirring address full of the old time vigor of many cam- paigns. L. s -NEAR ACCIDENT. -What might have proved a serious accident took place at Stavcrt‘s shore, North Bedo- quo last Sunday. A party of Summer- side young people have been camping there and on Sunday were visited by some of their town friends. A young man not much used to canoeing think- ing it would be nice to take a lady friend for a sail employed a canoe that was on tho shore. All went well till thcy were a considerable distance out when tho canoe apparently slid from under them throwing the occu- pants into tho water. Fortunately the young lady was a good swimmer and sho hold her companion afloat till help arrived. On reaching shore the young man hastily secured his team and departed for town, in his great hurry narrowly escaping collision with another tcam which suddenly turned out ot' a cross road ahead of him. With- out furthor mishap he reached town and vows he will ncver go canoeing again. -SPLENDID SUCCESS.-The tea at Graham‘s Road, New London on Sept. 7th. was a d-_cfled success in cvcry respect. The wrather was all that could be desired, th t attendance was large, the tables were excellent and every one was well satisfied. Though the \vriter has not ascertained the amount of the proceeds, he is free to say they were fully up to antici- pations. The athletic cvcnts were a feature of special interest especially to the young men. In this connection the management are greatly indebted to Messrs Pendergast and Mathiesou of Kensington, both of whom are ul- wuys ou hand to encourage clean mau- ly sport among the young men ln this part of the Island. Mr. Pcndergast who stands high in athletic circles was umpire of the contests and was well pleased with the work of the Gral1am's Road athletes. He was hezxrd to say that both Cash and Campbell had a brilliant future ahead of them. The first event was the running high jump won by Hugh Campbell, making 4 ft. 91/i, in. with Bert l\‘lcKay, making 4 ft. 7 in. The 2nd. event was the pole vault also won by Hugh Campbell, doing 8 ft. quite gracefully. John (lash was second. The 3rd. event was the hun- dred yards dash won by John Cash, with Hugh Campbell a close second. The most interesting foot-race was tho qunrtor mile. There were quite a number of cntrics, but on the last lap it resolved itself into a fight for first place between Cash and Campbell. it ended in a tie, but the judges were of opinion that (lash won hy inches though not making so strong a finish as Campbell. The time was 1.9. Thus we soc, Quccu Catherine l\usn”t the monopoly of all the spccd in Gralurnfs Road. ln the heavy hammer throw. Miss McLean had been in apparently good health al- most up to the time of her death. Some two or_iJ1`ree weeks ago it ap- pears she complained of symptoms which made her fear that she was be- ing threatened with appendicitis, but suffered little inconvenience and was able to continue her duties, and was working on Saturday. On Sunday however, her trouble assumed a seri- ous aspect, and on Monday she cuter- ed the P. E. 'Island Hospital, where it was found that she was suffering from tumor. An operation was per- formed on Wednesday and the malig- nant growth removed. She bore the operation well and it was confidently hoped that her recovery would soon ensue. Sad to say, however, she after- wards collapsed and notwithstanding all that could be done, death interven- ed. and her spirit passed away yester- day morning at 6.30. Deceased was very popular and had many friends who will sincerely mourn her sudden demise. For over twenty years she had been a faithful and trusted assistant with Mr. Sterns and will be greatly missed by the many with whom her duties brought her in contact. Sho was a daughter of the late Hector Mc- Lean of Long Creek, where her mother is still living. Only a few days ago her brother Walter returned to San Diego, Cal., after a visit home. The other brothers arc Frank and Alexan- der in Califorxlia and Norman at home and there are also the following sis- ters: Mrs. Willlant Stretch of Long Creek; Mrs. Ludlow Jenkins of Mount Albion and Mrs. Benjamin Robertson ot' Winnipeg. The funeral will take place on Saturday f|'om her mother's_ homo in Long Creek. Tho Guardian joins in dcepet sympathy. SHIPPING _N EWS ENTERED. - Schrs. Wild Brier; Perry; Mlminlgash; CLEARED. -Sc.
