Years ago there was A bill .and killed-by Liberal votes, too,-ir ltlie Senate, to incorporate a. company ito establish and operate s Qar Ferry _at the Capes, Later, and possibly be- _fore that time, George E. Full of ithis' city was the earnest and most 'C0¥lSDicu0us advocate of a Car Ferry, land The Guardian cheerfully accords lto Mr. Full such credit ss may be .due for a movement which we did _not at that time support. i The company project did not find _favor with us, first of all because the .party in power was committed by ‘sir wlizrio Lallriers famous letter to The Guardian to the survey and con- struction of the Tunnel, and we were unwilling to release him or the party shifts and alternative schemes were the Tunnel plan bymen who inadver- tently vvere digging their political ‘graves by their opposition, secret or open, thereto.. ` 5 We were frankly and openly opposed to releasing the Laurier Government from its pledges; we were opposed to handing ovcr the operation of the connecting link between the Island and the mainland to a company, he- cause that would perpetuate the AR FERRY ‘the fight kept up for long years ‘for iresziitntivcs in Parliament and by ihe Guardian and others, wc should .wt even how have the present good .Prospects of having the promised con- lnection made. ` With the downfall of the Laurier Government new conditions arose. Messrs McLean and Nicholson took the matter up with the new Govern~ ment and reached the conclusion that I the friends of the Tunnel project and the people generally would ac- cept a Car Ferry, to be established and Ollerated by the Government, without prejudice to the Province’s claims to the Tunnel, if the Ferry failed to give satisfaction, it would have the advantage of being put in operation much sooner than the Tunnel could be built and :right be more satisfactory than to wait long years for the larger and more costly work. The matter was submitted to The Guardian, coupled with the con- dition of the standardising of the P. E, Island Railway and the abolition of the 'three short-haul rates, and we had no hesitation in accepting it. It was submitted to the people in a number of public -meetings and gen- erally approved and was at the out- set favorably received by the press of ,hosh political parties. lf the Laur- lier Government had made a like pro- lposition in I-larch last or at any time later during: their term of power 'wc _would have accepted it quite as _‘promptly and cheerfully, But on the ‘eve of the election Sir Wilfrid Laur- Eier and Hon.
