NEW YORK NEW YORK (AP)—A dis couraged and cautious stock market , Wedhesday took its worst loss iti three weeks. Trad- ing was moderate. The Dow Jones industrial a etage, widening its losses at al- most every half-hourly reading, took a final loss of 12.42 at 793.59 — its sharpest decline since the plunge of 13.53 Aug. 29 when the average reached its 1966 closing low of 767.03. The drop took the Dow indust- rials down again . below the magic 800 level which it re crossed during. last week’s rally. The 38.75 points gained by the Dow industrials last .week. incidentally, have been reduced by: a loss of 20.71 points taken in three trading days this week. The losses of glamor stocks— wot included in the Dow Jones average—were even more strik- Ing than the declines by the key stocks which comprise oP the av- rrage. ’ CUT INTEREST RATES Market sentiment was pressed, brokers said, by word ef President, Johnson’s plan to issue a new form of govern- ment savings bond. Johnson also signed a bill allowing bank and savings and loans associa- tions to set new and more flex- Yle rate ceilings and called ris ing interest rates one~ of “the most dangerous threats to & yound and healthy economy.” Subsequently, # was an aounced some interest rates will be reduced or limited. All of this underlined one of {—the_major_factors in this: year’s hig stock market drop—tight - money and high interest rates. The Associated Press aver- age of 60 stocks fell 3.7 to 286.3, its sharpest loss since Aug. 29 when it fell 5.5.
