London Truth, in reviewing the past cen-
tury tcok a very pessimistic view ofthe
outl0ok.He sees the plutocrat everywhere
in the ascen dant, and thecivilized world
moving to an ignoble end. The nineteeth
century came in like a lion and went out
likea lamb, in Mr. L'ibouchere`s view.
It gave us men and women forceful and
wise who have left few or no successors.

women of genius have their names associ-
ated with the past century, and asks,
where are the ten that are living? _
No doubt the world of to-day is much
engrossed in the race for wea1th,a.nd there
is perhaps for the moment a dearth of
great names such as stood out prominen-
tly in the records of the past century.
But if we divide the past cycle into deca-
_les how many shall we find who were at
the zenith of-their fame in any ten years
ofthat time? This is fair test. Tenny-
son, for instance, in the last twenty

manifestly unfair to match the famous

at-various times constellations of genius
and talent in the ascendant and has more
