He admitted that the proposed bill was not a gerrymander as far ss Nova Scotia was concerned. It was the prire ple of the bill that he objected to. He was of the same opinion as Mr, Davies in regard to the legal point raised by Mr. Davies. Mr. Hughes followed, dealing at length with the manner in which the Mowat Gov- erument gerrymandered the Province of Ontario, Yet the grits never condemned them for doing so. He showed that Mr. Mowat, through his gerrymander bill, held power in Ontario to-day, notwithstanding that he had a minority of over five thou- sand in the Province. The repentance speeches of McCarthy and (Brien reminud- ed him of the utterances of reformed rene- gades in religion. The debate was adjourned. CANADIAN CREDIT. The New Loan Well Received, Lonpon, June 9. Canada three per cents., with interest due July Ist are being dealt in at 944 per cent. MONTREAL, Jane 9, Dr. Wardrope preached the opening sermon before the Presbyterian General Assembly. Rev. Dr. Caven and Rev. Thos. Sedgwick, were nominated for the moderatorship, Dr. Caven being successful, 115 to 82. Rev. Dr. Fraser, clerk of the Assembly, has resigned on account of old age. MonTREAL, June 9. Although some of the leading spirits of the general presbytery got to work to-day this great religious parliament will not get down to business until to-morrow. The majority of the three hundred and sixty delegates have arrived. The retiring moderator, Rev. Dr. Wardrope, preach- ed this evening, and Dr. Caven, of Toronto, and Rev. Thomas Sedgewick, of Tatamagouche, N.S., were nominated for the moderatorship, Rev. Dr. Caven being the successful candidate. The vote stood, Caven 115, Sedgewick 92. The resignation of Rev.
