Chen the little ones get their feet cold ‘ The decrease in the number of divinity students in American and Canadian colleges has from time to time formed the subject of newspaper com- ment and has been' discussed at the annual conventions of various religious bodice. The Fume drift away from the u»ii.i.~iry lim been noted in Great Britain and on the Continent. For several years lhe Established Church of England has found its supply of clergy- men growing fcvrer, and not lonsz ago a famous family remedies has time and Series of lemus was published in the again saved the little ones and older "London Spectator discussing The Dearlh of Candidates for Holy Orders. This wide-spread and general experi- ence of theological colleges and semin~ aries is not to be accounted for by the de~ clension of religious faith. The fact is that the number of _,honorable ceilings which ayoung man may seek has been greatly iacreasedlu recent years. Form- erly there were but three learned profes- sions commonly spoken of, divinity, the law and medicine. Now we have in the numberless branches of business a much wider ileld. Engineering alone attracts hundreds to one or other of its subdivis- ions, civil, mechanical ,hydraulic or electri- cal; mining, mauufacturing, archrit»ecture literature, journalism and art each offer their prizes of good positions or remuner- ation to those who possess the requisite attainments. Science has enormously en- larged the field of medicine and surgery. In fact all other professions have widened their field while of theology 8lone little more is known or taught than was known and taught hundreds of years ago. It is easy to see that the iield for occupation for learning and talent has been so much enlarged that the Gospel ministry is not perhaps so eagerly sought for as a life calling as it was at a. former period. Possibly this may even be a blessing in disguise. Men of the best talents will still' enter the ministry when impelled thereto by a strong sense of duty, and these are obviously of the class most desirable and most likely to be useful. Nor is there yet. any notable dearth of ministers in the world. There are still about as many ministers in most countries as there arechurehes seeking pastors and willing to maintain them. It can hardly be desirable that there should be a very considerable over supply. In fact the universal law ' of supply and flemandmust apply to the teachers of religion as to those in other life callings. ___¢-#_ The tarid adopted by the new Common- wealth of Australia is a highly protective one-not so high ss that of the United States but higher than the Canadian tariff.
