"Another innovation in the De- partment of Agriculture is the placing of veterinarians in strat- egic points in the Province. "we in Kings County will soon be able to get ii. veterinarian from Montague for a very reasonable s ”Time will not permit me to go into details on the activities of the different Departments. These de- tails will be given by the Ministers in charge. "Our Opposition friends criticise the Government tor not spending enough in the Department of Agri- culture but they lose sight of the (act that the very large expendit- ures that are made to improve the roads are really an assistance to Agriculture. "Our present day system of farm- ing and marketing demands im- proved roads and we are getting these improved roads as last as the finances at the Province will al- law. "Mr. R.R. Bell. the new Leader of the Opposition. was reported in the press to have made the state- ment that the roads of the Prov- ince are no better now than they were in 1935. I can hardly believe that the responsible Leader or a Party would make such a stall.- lllflli. Progress ln Roads "Great progress has been made in the making of roads. but they cannot all be done in one or two years. Some people will have to exercise l-I little patience but it will not be too long before there will be improved roads not more than two miles from the most remote farm as stated by the Premier. "The Liberal Government has done much to improve our educa- tional system. It is true that our teachers are not receiving as much pay as we uould like to see them getting; but with the greatly increased supple- ments in all Districts and the in- forward by our energetic and pro- greulvs Government. Under this department is placed many ini- portant services to our fisherman and tamer I. ' "Here we have Land Drainage and clearance. lllectrical Inspec- tion. Town Planning. Fish and Game 2- t tlon. Pest control. For- estry. Trade. Potato Warehouses, Transportation, and the Fisher- man's Loan Board. been able to givs. they are now paid considerably more than they received previous to 1943. "By abolishing the Land and Road Tax, the Government made it possible loi-'tha school Districts to vote these larger supplements to teachers. "Most farmers are now plying as much Land Tax as we ever paid, but we are paying it in the form of school Tax for the benefit of our teachers and schools rather than the Provincial Treasury. "The poucy of the Jonas Gov- ernment ol assistance in the build- ing of new schools and repairing old buildings has brought grat'.ty- lng results. There is ardly a school district on the Islan that has not taken advantage of this plan and have either built new schools or repaired their old buildings. As we drive about the country, it is a pleasure to view these new and improved schools. Another great accomplishment of the Liberal Gov- ernment is the establishment and operation of the Vocational School. Here many practical courses are given in brick-laying, plastering. biacksmithing, motor mechanics, carpentry, agriculture and domes- tic science. It is rcgretable that more of our young people from the rural districts do not take advant- age of these courses. All these branches of the Department have rendered great service to the people and the Department is still grow- ing. "Quite lately a full time Director of Fisheries has been appointed. and now for the first time the fisher- men have an olflcial at the Gov- ernment that is working exclusive- ly in their interests. "I have mentioned a few of the activities of our progressive Lib- eral Government. It you listen to the other Liberal speakers and plat- form. I think you will decide that the record of the Jones Govern- ment is a good one. "Do'you wish that Government to remain in office. to continue to govern our Province with initiative, vision and determination? or do you wish to elect a government of the Conservative Party who can do nothing else than attempt to continue the policies of the Jones Government? Are you going to put yourtruatinalsadsrthat critic- lnss the Liberal Government for iri- curring some dsbt and than urges increased expenditure in many da- partments? "There are only two ways he can increase expenditures without adding to the debt Mr. Hall would either have to incrsaaa tan, or he would have to dlspansrwith some of the services now baingipro- vided. What service is he going to discontinue? - ”rhink it over and I am sure you will decide to cast your ballots in favor of the Liberal candidates. Appeal To lloclon "To the ' t or Second Kings: "My colleague Mr. Harvey Doug- las who won his election last fall by such a large majority is again in the field for re-election. Mr. Douglas is a prwctical tamer and a man who is highly respected by all who know him. He is s vetsran of World War 2, having spent near- ly five years in the Air Force and served overseas. In the short time that he has been a member at the Legislative Assembly. he has shown his ability as our representative. 1 am sure that the people of our Dis- trict are going to send him back this time with even a larger maj- ority than hs had last fall. "Mr. Douglas and I would like to Health And Welfare Look for the YII-LOW PACKIC! and myself. "I assure you that when we an elected on April zsth we will put forth every effort for Second Dis. trict of Kings, and for Prince Ed- ward Island." ' ' be able to see everyone in the Dis- trict bcforc the election, but as the time is short I am afraid that is not going to be possible. "I take this opportunity of colic- iting your support for Mr. Douglas T "Another Department of the Government that has made phen- omenal progress is the Department. or Health and Welfare. It has now become the greatest spending De- partment of the Government. 1' would not attempt to explain the many different branches of this service to the people of the Prov- ince. It is sufficient to say that the administration of this Department has elicited the highest praise from the former Leader of the Oppos- ition, Hon. Dr. W.J.P. MacMillan. a man that is very competent to judge in matters of health and wei- fare.
