The Board of Gover- nors of Acadia, unlike the Boards of some of the other colleges, is not an inde- pendent selfperpetusiting body with dual authority. Speaking in an informal and cursory way I further mentioned the fact that the cogent reason why the friends of Acadia selves make amalgamation desirable. It any collello is experiencing temporary been one hundred and forty, which ap- proxinates to the number which the in- stitution can edicientiy handle with its present accommodations, -audits methods of teaching. In matters of finance, larger resources are urgently needed, and must be forthcoming, if the future is to be met with growing efiicincy, and with a pro- gressive adjustment of the work tw the demands of the times. But the history of recent years has created a hopeful sp‘rit at this point. In the last year of Dr. Sa.wyer’s presidency, a bequest was left to the educational work at We lfville of $1(l),000.00. Smaller bequests have come in since. Within the last five years a popular appeal to the constituency of college has resultedin the iaisiniz of $75, 000.00 more. Within three mouths from now the last dollar of this amount will have been collected, audi the way will bei open for further aggressive proposals. The response to this last appeal was spontaneous and hearty in the highest de- gree. Moreover, it has not exhausted, but enlarged the spirit of beneiicence and de~ votion towards the college. Instead, there- fore, of depression, there is, as I have said, a spirit of large, and well grounded hopefulness and ccnlldence that the fut- ure can be met with greater and grrater eflicieucy. Another remark alluded to in the despatch ought to be made clear, the remark respecting the University of New Brunswick. If the reports in the press are reliable, Mount Allison University has already declined to confer. The Uni versity of New Brumswielf, on the other hand. has appointed a committee iq uie t with the joint committee of Kingl-i and Dalhousie, but with the pri limit ary in- timatiou, according ta the Mcrning Chmniclr, that its governing body has no hope that ary si-heme can _be acceptable to her. Funds for its supporti ,are gathered from the churches of the three fpravinoes. The Baptists of New -Brunswick have as imporiauta stake in it as the Baptists of Nova Scotia. Were ‘the Baptists disposed to amalgamate, it iis but reasonable to suppose that the New Brunswick section of the constitu- ency would prefrr to merge their in- fluence, and their share of Acadia's endowments, not in a new institution in the Nova Scotia capital, but in their own prJviircii1Universitv. Apart alto- gether, therefore, from any consideia- tion of the abstract merits of the question of consolidation, it would seem that the recent course of events has already put the matterfor Acadia outside the realm of practical questions. One further point needs a word cf‘ elucidation. I statedgto the author of the despatch that if the question of consoli- importint and fundamental of whlchi _would be that it would involve ani abandonment of tiiat~Chiistisn ideal of college education for which Acadia has_ stood throughout her entire history. Other-ideals there are. of course, which are wholly woithy, and which in certain circumstances may be the only ones practicable. The state university, for example, sometimes becomes a necessity. ` -Such an institution, being supported and L controlled bythe state is, of course, iii- _ competent to deal with things spiritual, and must confine itselfto the sphere of secular education. Another type of co1~ lege is the independent college which, while free from state connection, adopts these colleges there might be from time to Kings in- seeking -amalgamation -with vmhlmtivv. however. would :ive no f gm... -. i ",,,,,,' f _ ,mug 4,, _. ,L .Q ff Dalhousie did not ofitselt supplyauy y¢ry|guara.utee at this point.
