They were house hunting be- cause they wanted a change. Too many folks knew where they were now living. They had visited sev- eral old dens in the ground. The ground was frozen now and they couldn't dig a new one if they wanted to. They had visited two or three big trees that were hol- low either at the bottom or not too far up. for Gray Fox and Mrs. Gray are good climbers. So far they had not been able to make up their minds. - "Do you remember the old hol- low log we used once a long time agn'"' asked Mrs. Gray. "Of course, I do." replied Gray Fox "Scat! " said she. Gray grinned irlicii she saw this. ''it uliiays uas a good place," said she, "non it is hotter than ever. if we are rarctiil, no Strange But True By F. l. Two polite men stepped from the car; and looked cu ously at the license plate. Then tey carted Johnson off to jail. En route they explain- ed to him that they were two do- tectives from the stolen auto de- tail and that they had been look- ing for the stolen car Johnson was driving. On the plains of West Texas. there's a unique little town that is not listed on any map, yet it has more visitors than many a place prominently shown on all the are burrows connecting miniature buildings and its inhabitants live mostly underground. It is a place called Prairie Dog Town. and it is virtually a suburb of Amarillo. Tourists from all over the United States, Canada. Mexico. and even Hawaii, have signed the mayor's guest book. Of course the mayor one will ever know xiv hm? 3 home in that old log. Mrs. Gray led the way. She started to enter the old log. She was startled by a growl. It was a low growl. but it had a very ugly sound. She backed out so suddenly that she backed right into Gray Fox who was right behind her. "Whats the matter with you?" asked Gray Fox. ”There's someone in there." whispered Mrs. Gray. "Didn't you ' hear that growl?" I "No," said Gray Fox. ”No, I didn't hear any growl. if there is anyone in there. we'll go in there and pull them out." He pushed Mrs. Gray aside and bodly started to enter the old log. This time it wasn't a growl that stopped him. It was a snarl, and it sounded a lot worse than a growl. Gray Fox backed out as hurriedly as Mrs. (Gray had done. ''I don't see you pulling anybody out." said Mrs. Gray. . Before Gray Fox could reply Mrs. Joe Otter appeared in the doorway. The two Foxes backed farther away in a hurry. "We did- n't know you were in there. or we wouldn't have come in." said Gray Fox politely. Mrs. Joe arched her back in-the way that some members' of the Weasel family can. "Scat!" said she. Gray Fox and Mrs. Gray scal- "i.et's go over there and have a look at that." shid Mrs. Gray. Gray Fox was willing. So they trotted off through the Green For- est to look at the big hollow log that had once been their home. It was a long time since they had been there and now when they approached it they found that the young trees around it had grown much. When they had lived there those young trees had been so small that the tops.were hardly above the top of the old log. Now the old log was completely hidden.
