The Queen has conferred the blue ribbon of the order of the garter upon Prince Albert Victor, son of the Prince of Wales. A desprtch from Hong Kong states that the reported crossing of the frontier of Tonquin by Chinese troops is as yet uncon- firmed. i A telegram from the Governor General of the Dutch East Indias says that the bays within the area of a recent volcanic distur- bances are filled with banks of pumice stone. The temple of Boro Budder, in Java, the largest Buddist temple in the East, was destroyed.by falling rocks. Thirteen thou- sand florins have been sent to Batavia by telegraph for the relief of the district. The police are in possession of facts which show a revival of Fenian activity in London. All noted rendevous of pro- minent Irish agitators have again been placed under strict police surveillance. The Count of Paris arrived atthe French capital on the 5th inst. The Temps reports that the Count of Chambord left 60,000,- 000 frances, which are to bedivided between the Duke of Parma and the Count of Bardi. Anti-Magyar disorders broke out at Beduja on the 5th inst., and troops were called on to restore order. A conflict arose between a mob of peasants and a troop of Hussars, and the latter were obliged to re- treat for reinforcements. The peasants them attacked a body of infantry and sever- al persons were killed aud wounded on both sides. The Chinese legation at Paris is still without any official information in regard to the reported massing of Chinese troops on the Tonquin frontier. Dr. Joseph Williams, aged 35, a Boston physician, formerly of Montreal, has been arrested for criminally assaulting a twelve- year-old girl sent to get him to attend her sick brother. He has confessed the crime. There is consternation among the Mowat party at Rat Portage on finding that there is no appeal in the case cf the Grit specials sent to Winnipeg gaol for six months, and that their pets must serve their time in prison. By the way, it is hinted that Mr. Tennyson has no relish for the task the Queen has imposed upon him. Captain Webb’s death at Niagara recalls the similar fate of a man in Sicily just 100 years ago. Nicholas, surnamed ‘‘ the Diver,” on account of his many wonderfu! exploits, undertook, in the presence of thousands of spectators, to dive to the bottom of the Sicilian Gulf, where there is a dangerous whirlpool, and bring up some- thing which had been thrown in. He made the attempt and succeeded. Again some- thing more precious was thrown in, and he again succeeded. Finding that in the second attempt he encountered some sub- marine difficulties which he had not ex- pected, he declined to make another attempt, but a Sicilian noble throwing in a gold cup studded with brilliants as the prize, he dived into the gulf and was never seen again.
