N ARINE FREE DELIVERY- The great lakes which divide Canada from the United States, containing as they do half the fresh water in the world, are now the home of a vast commerce. As has been before told in these columns, the tonnage which passes the American and Canadian canals at the 'Soo during the seven months of open navigation is nearly three times as great as the tonnage which passes through the Suez canal during the year. An army of men estimated at 53,06) man these lake craft. They have fathers, mothers, wivr s, sisters brothers and friends with whom from time to time they may wish to communicate or who may wish to commuiiicate with them. It was found that the majority of the letters addressed to these sailors reached the dead letter omce and failed to find the persons addressed. andtnke cff letters from the hundreds of ve saels without interfering with the rush- ing traific. a scheme of marine free de- livery was organized which has proved agreat suc ess. Detroit was selected as the place for its operation, and a little white séamer engaged with an atten¢$~ ant boat. and men accustomed to boats and taught the duties ot postmen put on board. There is a day and night crew on board and the little steamer visits every craft that passes Detroit by day or night and delivers such mail on board as may be addressed to each vessel, taking oil’ whatever mail is required to be sent ashore.
