If our advices are eorrect, the only material difference is, that some of the financiers of New York, (who were before to be excluded) are now to give a hand te the work, and have a finger in the pie. Had Sir John been permitted to earty his plans out in 1873, the railway would in all probability, be now well-nigh and the country none the worse—perhaps ail the better —off. But the fatuous folly of the Grits, prevailed fer a season; and the great North-West seven years; and eonztructed, country lest, in time, Canada, in money, as many millions of del- ars. It will be interesting, now that his strep gest plank is swept away, to anticipate Mr. Blake’s next move «n Opposition. ot nd ale ate Tue Patriot does well to call attention to the necessity of care on the part of conduc- tors. If the conductors are half as reckless in their driving as the Patriot is in its stateinents, there is serious eause for alarm. We can weil understand how a long immu- nity fiom accident is likely to beget care- lessness in those responsible for the safety of trains. We know that owing to this eir- eumstances, many passengersare exceedingly reckless, lounging about the platformand get ting on and off when the train is in motionin @ way fairlyterrifying to those who kuow the danger ; and it may be that the train hands are also, at times, somewhat forgetful. But if our information is correct (and we be- lieve it is) the particular train to which the Patriot referred, was drawn by one of the little English engines, which cannot pos- sibly run at the rate of thirty-five or forty miles jan hour. The Patriot's informant musi, therefore, have been unduly nervous and excited; for he has _ greatly misjudged the speed of the train. The Patriot's fling at the conduetors was not at all necessary. Taken for all inj all, there is not a more careful and obliging staff of conductors on any line in Canada, | than there is on our railway. they are Island boys, they have been weil}! In making 4 graded com parison between two schools, the only fair and honest way to do 80 18 to take the averages of each school, embracing all the grades, as was done by us in the} statement referred to. This the Advertiser has not done, but has compared the sup- plements received by the teachers of the five highest grades of West Kent Street | School, with those of all the teachers of all} the grades of Queen Square School. The latter has its Infants’ Departments as well as the former; and therefore the only fair comparison that can be made is that of the averages of all the departments of each acheol. As the West Kent Street Schoo! has one grade higher than any department ef Queen Square School, no injustice can possibly have been done the latter in the comparison which we made. The remarks made respecting the supplements will ap- ply also to the daily average attendance of the two schools. It would be manifestly unfair to compare the daily average‘attend- ance of the jive highest departurents of West Kent Street School with the daily average attendance of all the departments of Queen Square Schoo!, as the latter would embrace the Infant departments, while the former would not doso. It is well known that the lower grades of ail schools have the highest daily average attendance. sdaneliiiea A Rev. An incen- diary could have ng objectin applying the torch to a house occupied by such a peaceable and well disposed citizes City Marshal has bee: matter, and has arrived at a first-class sup position, which is worthy of note, and were 1t not for our timate acquaintance with the Marshal, we should be tuclined to hint that none bu ‘apracticalillustrat ionin the past could suggest such an apt supposition. ié 1s this: A young r man addic ‘ted to that horrid vice of smoking cigars, : accompacied a young woman to a house | in the vicinity, and while iu con ver- sation, say in the rear of Mr. Grey’s, laid his lighted cigar on the bottom of the water spout. Departing, he left the cigar, which smouldered until early morn, when it ignited the conductor and set tire to the house. Now, this may or may not be the cause of the fire, but, the Marshal deserves credit for deep thought. However, we don't ‘think the young lady will give him due credit for his suppo S1- tion.
