The bomb doors could not be opened. P/O Webb mndc another circuit of the target, while his engineer struggled to open the bomb bay doors by hand. On the second run in, the aircraft was attacked by a fighter. This was beaten 0E, and the bombs were released on Montzen. Coming up from the target, three more fighters closed in on the damaged aircraft. Two fighters were successfully evaded, but while fighting the third, P/O \lt"cbb's aircraft was riddled by enemy bullets. One engine was destroyed. The port aileron and mainplnne were damaged. , . With controls severely damaged, P/Ov Webb flew back to Britain, landing with only two engines but: bringing his aircraft and his crew to safety. Because of "superb skill and erceptional devotion to duty in the face of heavy odds", P/O Webb received the D.S.O.
