(*) BLUE MOVES-ELTON JOHN ( ROCKET RECORDS) "Your Starter For.." is the minute and a half in— strumental that opens this two record set. It is a lively tune and from its title you'd expect the rest of the album to be the same. Not so. The ma- terterial is almost orches— tra or brass section ‘ cluttering up the songs, over—production, and too many long, drawn—out songs. The worst of— fender on the album is the last cut, a six and a half minute disco number called "Bite Your Lip". For two minutes John sings a couple of verses and for the remaining four ' minutes some choir chants "get up and I don't know why it's a two—record set. There's not enough good materia1~here for one. (* * * *) MISSING LYNX- LYNX (QUALITY RECORDS) This is another new Canadian band getting the "big push" from their record company. At least Quality has some— thing to push with Lynx. They have their own brand of rock 'n roll which is pleasing, but excell in their softer numbers such as "Visions" and "Holding On". Both songs gently evolve into tough rockers, then slide back to their original level of sound. "Lucifer' is the best of the rock'n roll numbers. "Missing Lynx" is a solid debut album. (* * * *) HEJIRA. JONI MITCHELL (ASYLUM RECORDS) This is a single album with a total of fifty-one minutes of playing time on it. The fact that there is not one boring I ELTON JOHN BORES ALL WITH "BLUE MOVES" teresting moment on the record is a fair tribute to Joni Mitchell. She has come up with a startling album, featur— ing unbelievable songs such as "Coyote","Amelia" and "Refuge Of The Road". It is an album that will satiSfy any musical taste.. ( * * *) GOLD PLATED— CLIMAX BLUES BAND (SIRE RECORDS) This album is on the edge of four stars but- just never made it. ,It is blues rock at its best, but I was never much for that type of music. The quality of the musician— ship is there, but not enough of the songs come off as being great. "I Just Couldn't Get It Right' is my favorite. ( * *) REX—REX (COLUMBIA RECORDS) . I've heard all of this before and it was done with much more finess by Led Zeppelin and Foghat. ( * * *) MIND EXPLODING— LUCIFER'S'FRIEND (JANUS RECORDS) This is a typical German dance". The major problem with the band is that all of» their songs are too long, stretched to the point where you wish they would hurry up and end. Two of the better cuts are "Broken Toy“ and "Fugitive" both of which feature some great guitar parts. Their ~ album might do it for them. (*) LOVE IS ALL AROUND— ERIC BURDEN & WAR . (ABC RECORDS) Why was this record, recorded around 1970, re~released? Any group that can take two of the best songs of all time (the Beatle's "A Day In The Life" and the Rolling Stone's "Paint It Black") and butcher them beyond recognision should not have a record contract. Actually, War has evolved into a’ decent band since the departure of Burden and this record is simoly an attempt by ABC Records to cash in on War's current popularity. Avoid it.
