Sin,—I was nota little surprised to vead the editorial column of the Guardian he Wespaper, & day or two since, &B article under the above heading in which the pro- eressive editor of thal paper undertakes to qualify the remarks made by Professor Robertson at one of the meetings recently held in this province, wherein the Protessor is eaid to have expressed “his great ap- } preciation of Provincial Exhibitions—they l furnish object lessons, advertise the resources of the country, and create en thusiasm among farmers,’—and added bis opinion mu hold at least one Exhibition yearly”. The learned editer of the Guardian then mag- pavimousiy says that what Professor Robertson thus stated is true, in part. How higbly pleased the Professor would be to know tbat thet great authority on agticul- ture and exbibitions had actually endorsed his rewarke, in part. The icarced editor then proceeds to say that caretu! observers have noied that there is another side to the picture—that there is & monotonous sameness about exbibi- tions. The biggest turoips, potatoes, mangles, etc. of this year, look wonder ully | like thove of last year. (Probably ‘hey are kept io cold storage), Further on he says that there is a p.infu In th prize et ais0, and ajtter eoul furiher very sagé remarks, informs hi- readers that is nut Opposed mouo'ooy making he Guardian to exbibit:ons and will gladly see avotber at some time in the future, if properly man~ aged What an admission for the Editor of the Guardian to make that in a province like this, where agriculture may be ewid to be lmost the only pursuit of the peovle, he really may indulge the hope that if he lives long enough he may yet see another exhibition here! I would ask, Mr. Editor, if agr:culture and agricultural pursuits are not encour- aged vy the holding of an annual extibi- tion, where tarmers and peuple ef ail classes may meet in friendly rivalry and compete for the prizes offered, what then would @ patriotic goverument encourage ? Soppoee that even the cost to (be country would be several thousands of dollars, is there any other way in which such an ex. | penditure can be made to better advantage in the interests of the public ai large? I ray emphatically, no—and I make this sistement without fear of successful con- tradietion; and I say further that almost every successful. farmer and stock raiser in the proviace will support my statement, Is it not a fact, sir, that notwitustanding the apparent samene*s in the various clasees of exuibits that musi necessarily that “each province gn be observable each year, these comp2tr tions have io the past, been of the very greatest benefi: to this province, in ‘nduc- ing exhibitors to endeavor to excel each other inthe production of the finest roots, vegetablee, fruits and cereals, aod in the procuring of stock of the best types in all classes. Where,I would ask, would the successful com petitors from this piovince at the 8t. Jobn and Helifax exbibisions have been but forthe preparation made in past years for oifr Provincial Exbibitiono? 1 say absulutely nowhere. Is not the reputation which the Island Province is now establishing abroad for first elass stock of value to the province far and away beyond the paltry sum that bas been spent by the Government for that purpose? Is it not true that the great im~ provemeat that has taken place in the agricultural industry of this Province is largely due to the exhibitions of the past years? Any person with any knowledge of the subject, and looking to the future of that industry, must see that the value of it alone cannot be measured by a few tnous- aud dollars. le it, then, a sign of progress that these things should now be brought toa stand- etill and much of the good results of the past allowed to languish? [think not. On the contary, I contend that a government having the interests of the province at heart will not allow euch a back ward step to be taken by the refusal to spend a few thousaod dollars on an exhibition open to the whole province, or indeed the maritime provinces. That anexhibition should be * properly managed” so as to be an object lesson io those who have sufficient interests and intell gence to profit by it goes without saying. With regard, however to the man- agement of the provincial exhibitions of the past ten years, | thiok it may be fairly claimed, that it has compared very favor- ably (as smal! things may be compared with greater) with the exhibitions of any other province of Canada. Tosuch an extent has this been the case that it has called forth the most complimentary re- marke from those who have attended from abroad as well as from the press of the Gaus Dodd’s Dyspepsia Tablets. ae No Need to be Frightened at the Symp toms, Though They are Frequently Alarming—Dodd’s Dyspepsia Tablets are a Positive Cure Are you oppresed after meals by a bloat. ed senation, a feelling of having eaten a great deal too much? Is this distressing sensation accoms panied bya worn-out. listless felling; by the raising of sour, watery fluid to the mouth; headache; nervousnese; foul taste ia the mouth; furred tongue; or the for- mation of gas in the stomach ? If your answer tothese questions be “Yes,” you have“Catarrh of the Stomach.” Sufferers from this disease not frequent- ly believe they have heart disease, and the beliet ie not unreasonable, until the real nature of the trouble is known, neighboring Provinces. I would however say that the “properly managed” remark made by professor Robertson was nol in- tended to cast a reflection upon the man- of the Provincial exbibitions agement ' held here, but to Point out that eo called exhibitions, without proper and adequate grounds and buildings and other necesealy adjuncts, and such as have been too often seen in some parts of this and other provinces, ecattered over a whele village or town, were not such as would afford object lessons or be a benefit to a province —this latter kind he would not encourage. But, Mr. Editor, the Guardian has nother fault to find, He says “ frequently aman who bas a’ garden patch captures the prize from & man woo basa farm.” Would the progressive editor, then, shut out the man who by his superior knowledge and industry, but often without the means to obtain a farm, from competition with his more wealthy brother—the large farm owner ? Or on t e other hand, does he want to prevent a man from competing because he possesses a little more meane thap his neighbor and is prepared to spend perhaps a litile more | money in possessing himself of the higher aud better class of exhibits and thereby thurs. the very best object lesson that C-n be given? Suvei iu tnis enlightened veriod of the world’s history, when the rule - the surviv lof the fi test, the editor of the Guardian woold not want to introduce a species of class-legisiation which in spy Other ephere he would be the first to con demo Is it not @ fact that ia England Her Most Gracious Majesty the Queen con tantly carries off many of the principal prizes at exhibitions held there with her magnificent animals ? Isit not trae that the Popes, of Compton, the Cochraves, the Ogilvies, the Greenshields, and nymerous o vers of the wealthy men of Quebec and Ontario are the chief exhibitors at the grea exhibitions of Toroato and Sherbrooke? Who ever heardof an enlightened press claiming that because perchance they wad; greater facilities than erdivary people for - procuring or producing the best, ehould be} shut out from competitions of thie kind. No, Mr. Esitor, iet it be hoped that the good work of improvement, so well com menced and so fairly under way, may not be sow cut off by a mistaken idea of economy or the part of the Goverament; but, instead, let a reavonable sum be grant- edand the door thrown open te competi- tion to Gur sister provinces, ad Jet a still greater stimulus be given to our peeole to compete with their bigger brothers ; and I have bo fear, tut that the pluck and enterprise which charadterize the sons of Prince Edward Island abroad, wil! be found in those at home, and that they will ere long be pre- pared to compete in a larger field than even the Maritime Provinces, to the great credit and suvstaniial adyantage of our 2 rovince.
