A ROYAL SEND-OFF, Early in the morning the Prince and Princess of Wales and their daughters embarked from West Cowes in the ** Osborne,” which, steaming slowly emong the yachts, with the Royal Standard blowing bravely from the main- mat head, appeared the most picturesque object at that time afloat. The marines aboard. the ‘Hector’ were marshslled upon the bridge, or some such super- structure, in hover of the Royal pres: ence, and their red coats seemed to give the five ship the one touch she wanted to coviplete her, It was generaily supposed tiat the motive of their Royal Highuess’ cri ise wasmerely.te have a view of.the racing, which was then about to begin in the shape of a schoover mateh; but about half an hour after the Prince and Princess were afloat, and when the “Osborne” was some distance to the westward, there hove in sight, away down in the east, 2 big steamer, with a 3 | black-and-white funnel, and a mass of ounting flying. Big vessels are familiar sivhts hereabout, and no notice would probsbly have been taken of the ship had it not been for the unusual exhibition of the flags which covered her. She steamed slowly along, and brought up abreast of East Cowes, a considerable Some said she had Cete- wayo ou board, others that she was a transport fresh from Portsmouth, but it was impossible for anyone who had seen her before not to recognize in the fine level man-of-war-like bull, the good ship ‘Holland,’ of London, bound to Egypt with a freight of ga'lant soldiers. The object of their Royal Highness’ cruise was im- meciately suspected, when it was perceiv- ed that the instant the*Osborue” canght sight of the “Holland” she headed for her, Soon the Royal yacht was alongside the transport, whose sides were lined with soldiers, aud surely it was enough to stir the heart of any Englishman to see the Royal standard flinging its shadow upon the deck of the troopship, and symboliz- ing by its proud folds the character ot the farewells which were being exchang ed. Not without real pathos, too. was the contrast created by the presence of this large ship filled with mea who were going forth to fight for the honour and interests of this country amid the light- hearted festivities of the regatta. The “ Holland ’ did not- linger long; in less than half an hour she was under weigh again, with the “Osborne” steaming in her wake. A thousand eyes followed the noble and patriotic spectacle, and for a time the races were forgotton. There is not a more stately merchantman afloat than :he **Holland,” and there was real grandear in her appearauce as, with a hundred flags streamiog from her masts and yards, aud ber sides sparkling with the accoutrements or the soldiers, as the sun swept in aud out of the swelling clouds which blew along, she glided slow- ‘ly past, followed by the * ‘Osborne,’ * until ‘the curve of the Solent took the two ships out of sight. or The Raliway neko. The Canadian Pacific Railway have now nearly five thousand men employed in ‘opening the road in the North West, out- side ot the force employed by Langdon, Shepherd & Co. The pay roll in May amounted to $269,156. On the western division the contractors have, in addition to this, more men employed, making ve wards «f nine thotisand men. at work. In 26 consecutive days, ending last night, cigity miles of line were constructed, a feat said to be without .a .parallcl in the history of railway construction in any country. The meeting was largely attended by delegates who were unanimous in condemning the action that had been taken by one. or two branches in the matter. Burraxo, N. Y., Aug. 1b, The following telegram was to-day sent by Mr. Mooney, President of the National Land League, to Charles ‘Stewart Parneil, at the House of Commons,;London :— The Central Land League Union of Phila- delphia has complied with your request and passed a resolution discountenancing any scheme to send men and money ‘to i Pacha.” ‘a scene —- — A stage Tornado. The most déatrestinn torpedo eter wit- nessed in Bangor, Maiwe, occurred. there ‘ast Tagsday. ‘be wind blew with terrible velocity ; the rain fell in sheets, converting the streets into roaring streams, the whole accompanied by incetsant thander and lightning. The destruction of property is very great. Buildings were blown down, roots taken off, chimneys demoltshed and signs and awni carried away.. The «pire of the Universalist church was blown down, the roof of the County Court House was taken off ; the interior of the Bangor House was injured ‘by a chimney falling through ; the European & North American Railway sheds were. blown dowm and. the curs imprisoned ; several houses were badly damaged and hundreds of chimneys went over... The business streets are, almost im- passable. with bricks, and debris. Large numbers of. trees. lie across the streets. The lightning struck a stable adjSiaing Maxficld’s wood factory and set it on fire. St. John’s Charch was struck bat / not much damaged. Several buildings in Ves- sie were burned during the storm. A vast amount of damage was done te the crops. The storm was loeal, covering a small ter- ritory. The estimated loss is $50,000 to $109,000. Trads With Australia. The favcrable impression made by the Canadian exhibit, especially in machinery, wt the Australian Exhibition resulted, as is genera'ly known, in the reeeipt of orders to a cohsiderable exteat by Canadian firngs, Avart from the im modiate result. of the encerprise which led to display of our goods aud manufactures at the great fair of our colonial cousins, the, efforts of Mr, Car- son. Woods, of the firm of Carson Woods, Rich & Co., of Sydney, have been largely Instrum: ontal in attracting the attention of ihe Australians to the benefit of trade with Canada. A Canaiian by birth, Mr. Woods has made several visits to this country, and last year, when leaving for his home, took with him a number of motels, samples and photographs, of specialties in railway building. These being brought before the notice of the Commissioner of Railways at Svdtiey, that mivister directed Mr. William Seutt, Chief Locomotive Engineer for New Sonth Wales, to take a trin to this country and make a thorough inspection of our rsilway manufacturing industries. To Mr. Carson Woods, it may be observed, the credit is due of being the first to induce the (overnment of New South Wales to des- vaich a bigh Government official to inspect Canadian manufacturing power. The result of Mr. Scott's visit has been most satisfactory, and orders for ratlway materials, to the amount of over $100,000, are already assured. In alldition to these a ca})legram was sent to Sydney yesterday, sudorsing the Davis car. Upon the report of Mr. Scott will depend whether the Dominion shall _ receive orders to the amount of at least £200,000 ster- ling, or $1,000,000 annually. Now is the time for Canada to secure Australian rail- way orders. In the United States the manufacturers are over-run with their own work, and every facility should be viven Mr. Scott to see what the portation ean do. ‘* TWENTY-FOUR YEARS’ KXPERLENCE,”) ‘te an eminent physician, cowvinces, Eahewati that only: eure for ‘* Nervous Eahossiipa 5, snd weakness of the generative. “hiremea Wo vepair the waste by giving Brain and of all the remedies [ have te oe “ Magnetic a a | is the best. remedy is now sold by all cents per box, or 6 for $2. an order for 12 boxes, 00, addressed to Mack bl err lg Lo., Windsor, Ont., they forward the good iree by mail, amd send their “+ guar- aatee” to a the m i aden f ae iy wgsthier = ifis L o « Z ' ,. “1 q
