THE BG MILL POND AND THE|=" LITTLE ONE. OF CANADIAN CITIES. Montreal, Feb. 23. Senator Drummond has made the follow- ing letter public :— Montreal, Feb. 21, 1891. My Daark Ma DrousmMonp,-- You are quite right 1m assuming that the statement in the letter enclosed in your uute of today is untrue. [ am not in favor of Unrestricted Reciprocity, or any- thing of the kind. I am well enough ac- quainted with the trade and industries of Canada to know that Unrestricted Reei- procity would bring prostration or ruin, l real ze that tor saying this I may be accused of meddling in pulitics, but with me this is a business question and not a politics! une, and it vitally affects the in terests that have been entrusted to me, 80° that I feel justified in cxpressing my opinion plasiniy. Indeed, since oppusite viewa have been attributed tv me, | feel bound tu do so. No one can follow the proc.edings in Congress at Washington, and weigh the utterances of the leading; newspapers of the United States, without being etruck with the extraordinary j -alousy that prevails there concerning Canada— jealuusy growing out of the wouderfal develupment of her trade and manufactures within the past twelve years. It was this jealousy hat prompted the anti-Canadian features of the McKinley bill. It was re- presented and beiicved at Washington that ; the Canadian farmers largely depend upon the United States for a market for many of their chief products, and that their loyalty could be touched through their pockets, aud that it was only necessary to ** put on the screws” to bring about # political up- heaval in Canada, and such # reversal of the trade pelicy of the country ae would inevitsbly tead to Annexation. I have found it necessary to keep well informed as to the drift of matters at at Washing'on, because the interests of the Canadian Pacitic Raiiway have veen tireat- ened by all sorts of restrictive measures, and from my ku wledge of the feeling there I do not hesitate to say that if the reault of the pending election in Canada is what the authors of the McKiuley bill ex- pect, anvother turn of the screw will fuilow. No comfort is to be found in the recent disaster to the R publican party in the United States. It was not the anti-Can- adian features of the McKinley Bill thas caused this, but the heaviiy increased duties on many articles the manufacture of which at home was intended to be furced. This increase of du:ies came at a time of general depression among the farmers and working classes, and it was resented by them. Trade relations with Canada had no- thing :o do with it. ing of us. Putting aside all patriotic considerations and looking at the question of unrestricted reciprvcity from a strictly business stand- point, what in the name of common sense has Canada to gain by it at this time / Thousands of farms in the New England States are abandoned, the farmers of the Middle States are complaining, and those of +o ve of the Western States are suffering to such an extent that organized relief in oe- cessary. The manufacturers ever) where are alarmed as to their future, and must of them are restricting their ousput, working on short time and seeking orders at ab- sulute co-t sv that they may keep their best workmen together. We are i: finiteiy better offin Canada. We have no abondeved farms, no distress any- where, and there is work for everybody who is williog to work, Oar neighbors big miil » Aa > x aol? tie WOra WATCH, 2 G10, SL AND ok . luce Fisa@ au y SETSD> Qe* wee os, er goods. It 1s not necessary that a small boy should be a school boy to kuow what the result wuld be if we were tocutourdam our pond would at once fall to the level of the the other. Even ut we were suffering from hard times we could gain no hing from unre» ricted reciprocity. No maa of seuse wou'd seck partnership with > worse off then himself because he happ-ned to be hardup! You cannot make a guod egg out of two bad ones, The Canadian Pacific Railway is far away the largest buyer of maunfactured rticles in Canada. It buys dry ginds and groceries «s well as incomo’ives aud cars—it buys pias and needles and millinery as as well os rails and spikes It buys drugs and medicines They were not think- | and clothing as well es bolts and whe-ls axles. It buys almost every conseivable mn«ukets at home and abroad. It has built upor been instrum:nta! in bui ding up hun- dreds of new industries in the country and it is the chief support of many of them, and its dustries justifies my belief that unrestricted reciprocity with tre United States, and a protection taritf against the rest of the world, would make New York the chief dis ributing poimt for the Dominion instead of Montreal and Toronto, weull localize the business of the ve of Montierl ond Quebec, and destrey atl hope of the furure of the porte of Hlifax and St. John, would ruin three fourthe of eur manufacturers, would fill our streets with the unemployed, would make Easiern Canada the dumping g: ound for the grain and flour of the Western States to the injury of our own Northwest, and would make Canada generally the slaughter market for th- manufactures of the United States, «ll of which wouli be bad for the Canadian Pacific Rai way as wel! as for the eountry at jargs. This is my excuse for saying sv mach. I am not speaking for the Canadian Pacific Railway C mpany, nor as a liberal or a con- servative; but only as an individual man concerned in the business interests of the country and full of anxiety lest a great com- mercial, if nota national, mistake should be e. Yours traly, (“igned) W. C. Vax Honxva Te Hon, Geo, A. Drummond, Montreal. Kings Count. LARGE MEETING AT SOURIS EAST. MACDONALD AND MACLEAN HANDSOMELY RECEIVED. The meeting at the Agricultura) Hall, Svuris East, on Friday, 20th inst., was «t tended by about seven hundred electers of the surrounding settlements. Every part of the large hall was packed with intelligent people Dr. McIntyre was the first spesker, after the meeting was duly opened by the chair man, Alex Robertson, Esq For half an hour he occupied the platform, but his speech evoked no en hus sam. When Mr. John McLean came forward te spesk, everyone could see that he was the “‘faverite” of tue Mot Pot district. Mr. McLean delivered a splendid address, showing the difference, from « -finaucial standpoint, between the pulicy of the Lib- eral-Conservative party and unrestricted reciprocity, the plaform the grits have adupted. He showed chat the adup:ion of the grit policy meant direct taxation, and ‘hiv g. and ir is neceseari!y in close touch with | relations with these markets an these in-| _ FEBRUARY 25, 1891. Micdunaid was more Lkely tu spend money for its construction than the grit party who have declared agamst the expenditure of public money for railways and works of that kind Mr. McLean’s ch ar reasoning was highly appreciated by the audience, and repeated rounds of applause were given him. Dr. Robertson then came torward and made a subtie appeal to the farmers at the: meeting who were in por circum-tances, for support for Dr. Melutyre and him-elf, whw, he said, if elected, would open wide the door t» the United States. The independent and prosperous f.rmers ‘of the Esst Point district will vote solidly for McLean and McDonald; and alth ugh some of the grit **heelers” made an attempt to get up applause, it sounded very feeble in the large building where the meeting was held. Mr. A C Macdonald was next introduced by the chairman, and he delivered « telling speech, quoting from Erastus Wiman (‘be \father of unrestricted reciprocity) to prove that its ultimate object was annexation. Mr. Macdonald's address made a very , favorable impreasion on the meeting Thomas Kiwkham, Eq, M.L C , follow- ed, and tried to shew that th- people of Prince Edward Island paid duty b th on what they experted and what they imporr- ed, It was ** heads | win; tails you lose ” with hun. Senat..r Prowse then addressed the meet- ing, and from an independent st-ndpoint showed the neseasity of the people of the Island supporting the G.-bernment of Sir John. As one of the fist to advocate the building »f the tunnel across the Straits of | Northumberiand, he earnestly hoped that the people would do nething te jeopardize its speedy commencement, Mr. A Currie, of Souris, then talked for half an hour on free trade avd protection, Cyrus Shaw, Erq., M. P P., was invited to speak, and coming forward expressed the gratitication he felt at being present for the first time at a meeting in Souris. He tuvk up the question of Unrestricted Reci- procity from a farmer's standpoint, and after thoroughly sifting it, asked Drs. Robertson and Melutyre to preduce any ficial evidence they had that the United States would grant it. He quoted from Mr. Bilasine to sh w that the people of Canada cannot be British subj-c s and enjoy the benefits of the American market at the same time. He als» quoted LH. Davies jae faccriong that Unrestricted Reciprocity was absolutely impracticable. Mr. Shaw, during his speech, especially when he was depicting Drs Robertson and M-In'yre as struggling with Mr. Blaine for Uurestricted Reciproci y. was greeted with the wildest applause, and his telling hits caused Dr. THE CLIVPEK Barwa saan EREM R.
