When he left the booth he bent his knees, instead of hunching his shoulders as he usually did. lie pulled the front brim of his hat down, stuffed the handkerchief in his coat lapel pocket down out of sight. and returned to his car. He drove to a. district on North State Street where the subjects of the photographs which filled the Rogues Gallery were apt to be. Pulling up in an alley behind what appeared to be an abandoned wall of brick. but which was real- ly the back of a night club. he left his car and walked around front. He slipped into the corner tavern that bore the inscription "Bar- ney's" in faded blue letters on a faded green background and had windows obstructed by cases of dummy bottles and beer cans. The room was dark. ilight being furnished by a single well-shaded ceiling lump. It was large, but nu- merous tables. SUTTOII-nded by sturdy chairs. occupied all the floor space except a narrow aisle along the bar. The bar itself was common enough. hut the man who stood behind it was not. He was short, with a bulbous face and an even more bulbous figure that forced the dirty apron into exas- gerated contours. it was the face. however. that set him off from his fellow men, for its most noticeable feature was a long gash that look- ed like a streak of white tape from the tip of his right temple down his cheek and across his chin. Terry sat on a stool near the bar. wondering what the regular cus- tomers in this place found appeal- g. "Beer," he said being careful not to look at the bartender. He glanc- ed around, noticing that about half of the tables were occupied. When the beer was set before him he picked it up and carried it to one of the tables, where two men sat in sullen silence. "Mind If I sit down?" quired casually. One of the men stared at him through heavy-lidded eyes that rested for a moment on the ban- dage under the hat brim. He shrugged and said, "sure, go ahead. I've been closer to worse guys 'n you." Terry pulled up a. chair. set the stein of beer on the table and siouched down in imitation of his companions. He sipped the beer tentatively. hid a grimace of dis- gust and wped as much of the stuff from his lips as he could. "say." he said. as if suddenly re- membering something. "have you he in- boys seen Sick Salomon lately? Where's he been?" The two looked at each other, then one said. "No. Not for three. four months. why?" To be continued 0-?!
