Welcome back to those of you , who are returning and a special - greeting to those newcomers who, we trust, will shortly become lifelong Panther Rooters. ' hooking back briefly we enjoyed last Spring's Athletic Awards Dinner & we were well pleased with the committee's selection of Mary Bradley ( Who is back with us) as Welcome to Welcome to U.P.E.I. from the ACT Committee of Newman. If your're from away (an Island expression for anyone who is not a born and bred ‘Islander), welcome to Prince Edward“ Island. welcome from who? From ACT. A.C.T. stands for "Adult Christian Thinking". The ACT Committee on the U.P.E.I. campus is a loosly organized group working under the rather vague umbrella of the Newman Association, a national organization of Canadian university students. The purpose of the Committee is to help in little ways to strenthen Christian community on campus-- to encourage a type of thinking and acting which, hopefully, will lead to the deeper appreciation of Christian values among university undergrads. One of the main functions of the committee is the I e (I II, the female athlete of the year & erudite Art Laffin (Now "Doing his thing"in Holland) as the Male.‘ The Panther Booster Club had an active Summer. Their Celebrity Dinner was a big success. We must ad- mit we have heard much better talks than that given b3 Soupy Campbell of the/Ottawa Rough Riders & we were not much impressed with Yvon Lambert'slstory of his love of life while a Halifax ’ Voyageur but last year's Schenley Award winner .~ Canadian M.V.P. ex- S.D.U. Jim Foley made up for any deficiencies these speakers may have shown.» He is really a terrific character ‘ and we think we can be proud of his association with an Island Univer- sity. (We like to ac- cord him that high‘praise and refer to him as an "ISLANDER"...after all didn't he learn his trade here?) The Panther Pace was a big success too (even the horses seemed to enjoy it) and great credit must. go to Gerry Lajeunesse, Prexy of the Panther Booster promotion of the two ACT weekends during the course of the school year (one in early October and one in late Janurary). These weekends are designed to enable studentsto take an adult look at their Christian faith—- to realize that this faith is relevant in the modern adult world and can hold its own'With all the "ologies" encountered in the uniiersity curriculum. Because of its origin in a movement begun in Spain (El Cursillo—-) the ACT weekend has a kind of Catholic flavour. The subject matter of teh disscussions throughout the weekend however,is such as th be of real value to any Christian or to anyone who suspects that Christ might have something to say to him' aboutthe meaning and purpose of life. The first ACT weekend (Oct. 1,2,3,) could be for you the most it@ important weekend of your year. Club and all of his hard working group who labour-l -ed so assiduously with' the sole objective of raising funds for athletic scholarships for Panther ' teams. _We look forward, with great anticipation, to happy results frmn their efforts. ‘At a press conference last week, Coach Ed Hilton expressed regrets that his untried team would have to face strong U.N.B. for their first game. With a team car~ rjing so many newcomers Ed ' would have preferred facing another of the "C" teams but such was the luck of the draw and after their 19-0 loss, we think Panther fans should be quite hopeful as to the balance of the schedule. -We have the assurance of such neutral and objective critics such as John Neville and Gordon MacAlpine that we'll probably end up 4-2...at the worst 3-3 which would be a great improvement over last year's 1-5 story and would augur well for the future. Actually, Saturday's Fredricton game 'all students from A.C.T. Adult thinking with- out adult action is sterile. For this reason, the ACT committee of Newman ,seeks to promote i; interestin a couple of projects in the commmnity at large: help to slow learners and students with learning disabilities at one of the local elementary schools and visits to unvisited elderly people in the Senior Citizens' Homes ' in the community. ACT is interested in working in conjunction with any other group on campus seeking tor better university life andthe community at large. What ACT seeks to be is simply a Christian presence. on campus. Could be that in one way or another from time to time you might wish to associate yourself with one or another of the ACT projects or to drop by for a bull-session at one of the ACT reunions. If so, WELCOME. The more ACT~ors, the bigger the play. ‘ exciiing year“? " the.most‘dynamic in all x In Saturday's game we'd ' ‘Doug Crossman who left in was much closer than the, score indicates, as the. U.N.B win resulted large- ly from the play of their defensive unit as the ‘ Panther's contained their offensive team very ef—‘ fectively and it is rumoured to be one of Canada. We have a new Quarterback, Rick KiraIy, a Freshman from vanier ' in Montreal who has _ qualities long lacking in Panthers playing his positi he can run the ball as well as pass and call signals.” note the good play of Roger Outhouse from Souris & Richard Blair from Moose Creek, Ont._ For that matter a11.of g, the defense played very 5 well. We'd also mention Larrnyallant from ' Rumford Maine. (we have an idea, from the lineups of recent years that, when U.P.E.I.', plays, people in Rumford question "How did OUR team do today?) The set—up for Footbal is different this year but don't sit on the edge of your’ Ichair in anticipation of our trying to explain it because we think it sufficient to tell you ' that we play Dalhousie & Mount A., Saint F.X here and we have already play- ed U.N.B. away. In those far-off days whe we were young, faculty &' coaches could play for the college and if those long- outmoded regulations still prevailed U.P.E.I. might be on the top of the heap. Helping the coaching we have Bill Simmons, who starred for us for three years before transferring to U.N.B for his final year of eligibility. Last ' year he was a late cut from the Montreal Alouettes. 1973 after Very outstanding seasons was chosen on the All Canadian team after‘» being with the U. of Waterloo in ]97£.‘ Cary Mancuso was an Allgleague tackle while here, Gerry Edge was an All- Con- ference Guard from U.P.E.I. and Dave Fox departed from our shores for U. of Guelph where he was picked as an’ All Conference End. Of course directing all the activities is Coach Ed Hilton who, in spite of advancing years, is still quite active and nOt- at all content with resting on the laurels he won a » ; couple of years ago when' 1 he was picked as the #1 : Coach in Canada.» We; :“‘
