The Cadre Friday, April 1,1977 page 10; _ Deportation to clhilei?‘ LONDON, ONT. (CUP) - Refugee 'Pedor Denegri may be forced to return to Chile even tho— ugh federal minister of mane power and immigration, Bud Cullen, admits he has the power to stop his deportat— ion. ' . This was the outcome of a March 19 meeting between Cullen and more than 20-sup— porters of Denegri who met with the minister and the media at his Sarnia constit— uency office. ‘ Members of the group, wh: ich included representatives ‘of Amnesty International and the Coalition for Change, a London—based political orga— anization, handed the minis- ter a petition containing ab-' out 300 signatures. "It urged him to take immediate action by using his discre- tionary powers as minister to cancel his department's deportation order against Denegri. Cullen said he refuses because he doubts Denegri's claim for political refugee status is valid. However, _ Denegri and his lawyer are quite.adamant his case is bona fide on humanitarian and legal grounds. Denegri was forced to re— sign from his job as a civil servant after he exposed mi- litary corruption involving the black marketing of food from government warehouses. He was then arrested, impri— soned and tortured by the Chilean military regime. Denegri has witnesses of' his treatment now living in Canada who can testify on Chilean. junta “reign of terror SANTIAGO (CPA/CUP) - The military dictatorship of Chile has banned all polit— ical parties, imposed mail censorship, new work and press restrictions, and‘ext— ended for another six months the state of seige under which it can hold prisoners without charge or court ' order. . The junta banned "the existence, organization, ac— tivities and propaganda of ...all political parties, en tities, groups, factions,or movements with a political character." Disobedience can mean fines, imprisonment or exile.' The ban on political par— ties came after the junta allegedly discovered a plot by leaders of the Christian Democratic Party to overthr— ow the government. The Chr~ istian Democrats were the ruling party in Chile before the election of former pres— ident Allende, and the bloody military coup that ended his behalf. Cullen said Denegri did A not claim political refugee status when he first arrived in Canada last year and did not seek permanent residency here until before his visa expired last April. A Denegri replied March 19' that he did not seek politi— cal refugee status when he first arrived because he thought he would have no pr— oblem obtaining landed immi— grant status here. He was reluctant to declare himself a political refugee while his wife and family still live in Chile; , V Cullen said he would rep— ly in writing to the petiti— ons he received March 19, within a week, further deta— iling his reasons for not in teryening in this case. He implied that part of his re— asons for inaction concerned his worry about admitting "violent revolutionaries" into Canada. However, while Denegri says he is a socialist and was a supporter of the All— ende government before the 1 military coup, he has never been involved in using vio— lence for political ends. Cullen has been accused of denying Denegri asylum because of Canada's growing corporate interest in the Chile mining industry. At present Canada is one of the very few countries to have economic ties with the Chilean junta -— Western European countries have refused to trade with the regime. democracy there. . AFL—CIO president George Meany, meanwhile, has denou- need the fascist dictatorsh— ’ ip for "the documented pers— ecution, jailing and tortur— ing of Chilean trade union— ists...guilty of nothing more than their firm belief } in democracy and freedom." Meany said in a letter to the Chilean junta that "the excesses committed by your government in the name of anti-communism are typi— cal of the most tyrannical fascist regimes of our century." ‘ *Larsen.
