SCHOOL BOYS TURN UPON THE TEACHER AND THROW HIM DOWN STAIRS. A Campbelton, N. B., desyatch of the 5th says: Yesterday before dinner a row took place at the High School here, in which one of the teachers named Steeves, from near Moncton, was badly worsted. It appears that a young son of J. A. Johnson, locomotive foreman here, was ordered to leave the school and go home, and when he started to go he was ordered to return and take bis seat but refused to du so; where- fure the teacher seized him and attempted to tuump his head against the wall. At this juncture the son cf Conductor A. McLel- lan took a hand in, and another boy named Murray cime to the aid of his schoolmates, and in Jess than five minutes the teacher was badly slugged and thrown down stairs, where he was alterwards attacked by a mob of schuiars and run from the premises. The school was thrown in a commotion, the trustees had to be called together, and the affair is still unsettled. A strong feeling has been aroused against the teacher, who, itis claimed, is allto blame. His assail- fur their good behaviour. Odds and Ends, ‘‘Poor fellow, he died in poverty,” said a man of a person lately deceased. ‘That isn’t anything exclaimed a seedy bystaader, “Dying in poverty is no hardship. it’s living in poverty that pucs the screw on 4 fellow.” He had turned and twisted in his seat for sume time, vainly trying to make an imprvssion on the yuung lady who sat opposite to him, At last he bioke forth with, ‘Dues this train stop at the next station?” ‘Il don’t know,” she quietly replied; adding, ‘I hope so, if you think of getcing out there.” An Irishman tried to shoot a sparrow with an old Queen Ann musket. He fired. The bird with a chirrup or two flew away unconcerned in the foreground, and Pat was swif' ly and noiselessly laid un his spine in the background, Picking himself up and shaking his fist at the bird he exclaim- ed, ** Be jabers, ye woulda’t a-chirruped if you'd been at this ind of the gun.” At dinner, one evening, Miss Jay was most amiable to a very young captain, who. sat next to her. He was mightly pleased at being on such nice terms with a live act- ress. Suddenly she said, in her artless, prettly manner, ** 1 am to tuke a buy’s part ina new play, and 1 have been watching} you ever since we were introduced. You don’t mind, do you?” ‘** It made a fellow feel such a fuel, don’t you know,” remarked the captain, as he tola the story in conti- dence. It is needless to say that his subsequent read- ing of the tragedy did his work little jus- tice, and the Princess appears to have been but slightly impressed by his genius. The story is told that Longfellow and Fields were making a short pedestrian tour some few years ago, when to their surprise anangry bull stood on the pathway, evi- dently determined to demolish both poet and publisher. ‘‘l think,” said Fields, “that it will be prudent to give this re- viewer a wide margin.” ‘‘Yes,” replied the poet, “it appears to be a disputed pas- sage.” Dr. Radcliffe, physician to William III., lust the favor of his royal patient by a too candid reply when pressed to give his real opinivn regarding a complaint in the ankles from which the king was suffering. ‘I would not take your majesty’s two legs for your three kingdoms,” was the too truth- ful answer which would never have been uttered hy aman of readier wit. nn Local and ‘Other Items.
