The general feeling amoug jhationalists is well expressed by Mr. Har- rington, M. P.,who declares that the prose- cution of Dilfon is a triumph for the nation- al cause, since it isa virtual admission by the government of the complete failure of the attempt to rule Ireland with: ordinary law. He believes the government is thus depriving itself of the only cogent argament es able to offer against Home Rule. He ards the prosecutions as aimed not so thach at Dillon individually as at United Treland’s plan of campaign. He thinks Dillen’s best course will be to give bail, and and then immediately speak the same speech for which the Government institut- ed the preseeution. This would render the government powerless, for it would then be | under the noveasity of proving him guilty of some offence before entreating the recog- nig: ices, and the policy, under “the statue ard Ill., would thus be shown a The London papers treat © Times, however, says there a grave doubt as to the the govermment’s course, and ich more moderate in discussing the pic than some conservative journals. The News (liberal), plainly condemns the na- tionalists plan of compaign, but doubts the The | Heonomist, a paper which wields much in- ‘fluence among business men, and is a | staunch supporter. of Lord Hartington’s | p< licy, accepts the action of the government jas inevitable, though regrettable, condems ee strike against rent as insurrection in a | passive form, which, if permitied to obtain ia local footheld will spread till it becomes general and results tm the annihilation of the landlerds’. property. No paper ex- | presses belief in the rumor that the gevern-| jment will resert to military force to put idown the anti-rent agitation. The govern- could not take such a step without calling Parliament together, though cf]? course it could mect a sudden emergency with instant repiession and take the risk of obtaining indemnity from Parliament. here is, however, no evidence thus tar, pian. is contemplated. The ong Has been divided on the rish rent ‘question. ¢ Lord ~ Randolph Churchill, Mr. Henry Matthews and Sir Michael Hicks-Beach have hoped to avert a collision by using official pressure to bring about amicable arrangements be- rtween landlords and tenants. Lord Iddes- Lord Ashburne, Lord George Hamiiton and Mr. Smith have predicted the tailure of this policy. Lord Salisbury at first leaned’ to Lord Randolph Churel- ill’s view, but of late he has favored more resolute action. Nearly every nationalist member of Parliament wiil take the siump the coming week, and, if the government intends fol- lowing up the course it has begun with Dillon, its officials will have plenty of work issuing and serving summonses in all parts of Ireland. The last secret unearthod by United Ireland, namely, the letter sent ,by a member of the royal commission on the land question to an English member of parliament, and giving a summary of Gen. Buller’s evidence before that body, adds to the gravity of the government position. That Buller should so decidedly take the j side of the people and the league utterly ‘damns the government policy, and that a member of the commission should have written such a letter damns the commission. Lord Miltown is charged with being the writer and has not yet denied the charge. Of course, he was always known to be a consummate partisan, but it was not ex- pected that he would display himself so nakedly, even in private. Altogether, we appear to be in for some very lively times, and if: the Home Rule bill does not yet hold the field, Ireland, as Mr. Gladstone predicted, does.” mente Jeigh, mn a +> + <a —-——- Boston Markets. —— NOVEMBER 29. Srr,—The imhression made by Canadian students abroad, in whatever shool or pro- fession, has always been of the most satis- factory character. Indeed, we have little to regret, and much to be proud of, when the chancellor of one of the largest universi- ties of the United States expresses himself thus,—-‘* Canadian students, asa rule, are above the average, and exhibit an industry and perseverance in their work too often lacking among the young men of our own country.” In the medical departinent of the Uni- versity of the City of New York, the pre- liminary courses ia history, pathology and practical laboratory work have just been completed, and the list of students success- ful in examinations berets Mr. L. rehaut, of Murray Harbor South, who matriculated to the University in 1884, was a member of the class, and received two honor certificates; Mr. G. W. Smallwood, of Charlottetown, who is this year complet- ing his course in medicine, aes examinations suceessfully in 1885. In ad- dition, »t close of same year, he passed, with crodit, the three primary branches, viz., au.tomy, physiology «nd chemistry. We are pleased indeed to hear of the sve- cess of these young men; and hope that the remainder of their course will be marked by such tokens as hard earnest work will ever deserve and never fai] to receive. , Ikvine Sranuey. This voyage wiil be her last for the season. The Maggie is known as one of the smartest sailing schooners on the North Side, and there is no doubt but she will make a quick passage. The sea monster captured here some time since is still on exhibition at Rustico- ville. It has proved so remunerative that the captvrers are pressing their claims. It is to be hoped that nothing serious will ensue in the settlement of so triviai a matier. Wedding Bells.—Our * mage oad friend, Mr. R. A.
