Six,—The action of the Cify Council in dismissing Marshal Cameron from the position of Sanitary Officer and appoiat- ing Nr. Samuel McRae at a salary of $350 per annum, is generally condemned by the citizena, on the ground that the increased expenditare was unnecessary and uncalled for. The work was, of late years, very satisfactorily performed by the City Mar- shal at a cost of $100. The Marshal is the proper person to occupy the place; his position as Marshal brings him daily in contact with all parts of the city, and he is thus enabled to keep his eyes on all vielators of the sanitary law. He has now been replaced on an alleged technical ground, viz., that the law re quires that some other person than the Marshal shall hold the position of Sanitary Officer. Whether this is the law or not matters little. If itis absolutely the law a few weeks the act could be amended and the Marshal confirmed in the position. It is, however, openly charged that the Council desired to give Mr. McRae a job and to accomplish this the Marshal is dismissed the law question being made the scape goat. The citizens, however, are levied upon to the extent of #3519, to give Mr McRae an office. The Couneil, individ- ually, must remember that they are the custodians of the citizens money, and have ne right to employ it in unnecessary of- ttvials. This is strictly a time ef economy, not extravagance hence Pesiic Orrxion ee MK. MACLEOD AT KOYALTY HALL. Sin,—Divine service was held as an- nounced at East Royalty Hall on Sunday afternoon. The audience which tilled the hall listened with wrapt attention to one of the ablest and most eloquent sermons preached in that part of the country. Mr. Theophilue Macleod fully sustained his reputation as a public speaker and in- structor among thie people of this Island. He took his text from St. John IIL, 16, aud after expressing the belief that every- one in this world was intended to fulfil a certain destiny, he went on to say that in the Old Testament God was represented as a sort of tyrant to whom sacrifices were continually offered up, whereas in the New Testament He was spoken of as a loving Father, Himself providing the Sacrifice in the person of Christ His Son. Mr. Macleed pointed out that this idea was well enough in its way and admirably suited to the requirements of the people sume five thousand years ago, whose manners and beliefs were in nO way like ours. But God, in His infinite wisdom. certainly never intended it to be taken as a standard for this enlightened age, and it this mistake that was driving thousands of our young peuple into in- filelity. Don’t mind so much what Moses said as what Christ seid. He bore out his remarks by qnoting from Christ Himself—*Ye have heard it said, An eve for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, But a new commandment give I unto you, that ye love one snother. The speaker advised his hearers to put the Old Testament. on the shelf for a while and take up the new, where they would read the beautifal story of the prod igal son, which so aptly illustrated what Christ was only too willing todo for ue. He strongly objected to the conception of God in the New Testamefit,as that of a wrathful being, whose anger could only be appeased by the sacrifice of his Son, remarking that he was a God of love not of terror. Mr. Macleod spoke long and beautifully f Christ and his mission, illustrating his poiats ina most lucid and captivating manner, Mrs. Roome, from the city, who offic- iated at the organ, sang a stirring solo, as only she could sing it,and assisted by local talent and Mr. Theopolis Macleod’s wel!- known tenor voice, made the singing a!) that could be desired. Among those present several prominent citizens, together with a large was and were number of young people from the city, who are always made welcome. I'he people of East Royalty, as well as the numerous visitors present, hope to lave the pleasure of hearing Mr. Macleod again in the near fature.
