The Tour As A Task Now that the Royal tour is over, and we have seen something of the multitudinous formalities of the programme, \ve can better appreciate what the Ottawa Journal calls iRs sheer physical aspects. . The United States is supposedly accustomed to doing things in high gear, to packing 60 sec‘ Dnds into every minute. Yet so imprcissive has been the spectacle of Their Majesties unrelent- ing activity that the New York Sun chose in its leading article to discuss it as a prodigious feat. There must have been a score of things that paper wished to say about the Royal visit to Yashington and New York, yet it was primarily concerned at the virtual enslavement of Their Majesties to punctuality and schedule. "No Commoner, setlzliu out to do the World’: United states. . . . What matters it if you Emperor of India and Admiral of the Fleet. if yo head buzzes from trying to remember what. it be said to whom? What comfort is it is Lady of the Craltter and colonel-in-Ohio! of Black Watch it your insteps ache from the day's job? Better for oomfortfs sake that one be a lost and lonely soul, stepping up to the nesnat 'rn.vol- leis‘ Yet the four days in Washington and New York were hardly more exhausting that many another set-of four days spent in Canada. Truly, as a physical feat the Royal tuor has no pre- cedent, and is surpassed in wonder only by the deep and stirring significances it has revealed. A Little More Democratic ‘According to an announcement appearing elsewhere in today's issue, the Executive Coun- rl has fixed Tuesday and Thursday of each week as the days for receiving delegations and granting interviews. It will not be possible for the Premier to receive delegations or to grant interviews on other days of the week, owing to the pressure of official business. This, at any rate, will be more satisfactory to the public than the attitude taken by the Prem' ier in his first year of office, when he complain- ed of the invasion of his privacy by people “who wanted jobs or exemptions or little favours," and warned that in future, people who came to town expecting to see the Premier and govern- ment members with “little complaints of purely local interest" would be “merely wasting their time.” He exempted his own constitutents from this dire prohibition. i Now. if only on two days of the week, a more democratic procedure is to prevail, and Tues- days and Thursdays have been set apart as of- ficial recciving days for delegations and inter- viewers. The only requirement is that appoint- ments he made in advance through the Premier's secretary. The responsibility lies on the shoulders of Assistant Commissioner King of the R. C. M. P. who set the pace. Mr. Rankine McLaine who was at the wheel of the porters. Even crack newspapers reporters like those who accompanied the King and Queen across Canada. Witness the_ following story about the royal party at Banff, appearing in the New York '1‘imc.i. | “Prime M.iaiist.er Mackenzie King, in a woollen sport suit with large checks, strolled around the grounds puffing contentedly on a pipe.” Of course, it couldn't have been Mr. King whom tlic’Tt'm'rs reporter saw in this attitude of contentment. Mr. King may have registered con- tentment at being able to play hookey from his parliamentary duties; but '.Mr, King fl€_V€1‘ smokes. He does not emulate former Prime Minister Baldwin of the United Kingdom, whose pipe almost became a badge of office. Like his long-time political npponeiit, former Prime Mliiistdr R. B. Bennett, smoking is a consolation‘ Mr. King has never enjoyed. An Ontarioexchange suggests that the Times correspondent Will have to think up an alibi for that one before he returns to his home citv. About the only thing he can say is that he mis-_ took His Majesty the King for Prime Minister King,—-for King George smokes a pipe, and does it very gracefully. ‘ _ ‘ But imagine anyone mistaking Mr. King for, llle King_l ______;__.__..._..___.. i The Wood Islands Ferry Announcement that the S.
