$ ee The Irish University Bill. Mr. Shaw. the new Home Rule leader’, 1s most despondent as to the prospects not only of the Irish University education bill, but of the whole Home Rule programme. He does not say who is tu blame for the ab- solntely total absence of any of the frish bills getting the smallest consideration, but what is remarkable, he declines to blame the Gov- ernment. He mourns most over Her Majestys opposition, and complains: that, though Lord Harrington and Mr. Forster yive the Irish members plenty of fine words they will not pledge themselves to step in favor of the University, while the Radical wine, often found in alliance with the Ob- structives openly flannt their hostility to the hill. Meantime, the Presbyterian, Wes- levan, and other dissenting bodies in con- ference and synod assembled, continue to pass resolutions protesting againsts the bill as proposing to grant fund for the encour- agement of sectarian education. m= ¢ Failure of Crops in Ruesia. Despatches from St. Petersburg give a Joomy account of the failure of the crops n southern Russia and of the danger ofa amine in that pertion of the empire. In ome sections the crops have been des- royed by drought and hail, and grass- \oppers and corn bettles have made their ppearance and eaten up what little ef the rops remained. The distress of the people throngheut these regions is excessive. Representations ef their condition have ‘een forwarded to the Czar at Livadia and nis Majesty has expressed. his intention of taking immediate and efficacious means for the relief of the distressed agriculturists. + There is a tinge of sweetness in revenge, for the godly and ungodly alike, but few people will be dispesed to believe that the Rev. C. H. Spurgeon on hearmg that his libeller, Mr. Neal Dow, fell down stairs one day, and a little while afterwards tumbled off arailway car and dislocated his shoulder, exulted over it. The story goes that the famous pastor on being told of his enemy’s accident meaningly exclaim- ep, ‘*L thought so—I never tumbled down a flight of steps nor off a railway carriage.” | Scarecely anybody was convinced by Mr. Dow’s equivocal denial that in his reference te a beor-swigging parson, he did not mean Mr. Spurgeon, but nobody will believe that the latter returned evil for evil in the man- ner that this story says he did. —_—_--—_-_ > oe — -———_ Advices from Australia state that the boat race between Trickett, champion oarsmen of the world, and Laycock, is to be rowed on August 26. Harprxc, Esq., Brockville, Ont.:— Dear Str—It is now two years since your ‘‘Censtitutional Catarrh Remedy’ was intro- uced tome. I have waited this ong to see if the eure would remain permanent before do- ing this, my duty, to you, as at first the happy effects seemed to me te be ‘‘too good to a true.” I was afflicted in my head for years before I suspected it to be Catarrh. in reading in your Circular I saw my case described in many par ticulars. The inward ‘‘drop” from the head had become very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying long, I would feel like smothering and be compelled to sit up in the bed. My health and spirits were seriously affected, When your agent came to Walkertown in August, 1876, I secured three bottles. Before I had used a quarter of the contents of one bottle I found decided re- lief, and when I had used two bottles and a third, I quit taking it, feeling quite cured of that ailment, and have not used any since until of late I have taken some for a cold in my head, A sense of duty to sufferers from that loath- some disease, Catarrh, prompts me to send you this Certificate, unsolicited, with leave to make what use of it yon may see proper Yours truly, W. TINDALL, Methodist Minister. Port Elgin, Ont., Aug. 24, 1878. Ask for Littletieid’s Constitutional Catarrh ‘ Remedy and take no other. T. J. B. Harprxc, Dominion Agent, Brock- ville, Ont.
