The author of these articles is the
best-known, leader of the English
Socialists, and is‘pne of the founders
of the modern Socialist movement
in Great Britain. Under the
nom de guerre of "Nulloullm" he
wrote "Merrie England,” of which
one and a half million copies have
been sold. He is gditor of the “Cla-
i'lon,’" which is by general consent
' the ablest and most influential of
Socialist journals; and he is master
of a style that for vigour and terse-
ness has been surpassed by no Eug-
lish writer since the days ot’ Cob-
bett. The article was contributed to

VIII.-THE COST
But the cost! Yes, me cost would be
lleavy, but consider the stake. The
stake is honour, liberty, and the Etn-
pire. Be the cost what it may, the
stake is worth it.
Besides, as to the cost there are
three things to be said: the stake is
worth the price; we can well afford
the price; and if we refuse to pay
the price of safely we shall have to
pay the ten-fold heavier price ol' de-
feat.

for universal military training we can.

do for safety. Germany can pllt four
million soldiers into the field, fully

general staff.
The fact is that ill our presentdan-
gerous situation we cannot afford to
~considel~tlle cost. We cannot afford to
be ccollolllicnl. We have to pay some
of our money to save our ull: we have
to make :1 temporary sacrifice of some
ot' ollr liberty to avoid slavery.
The trouble is that the nation does
not recognize its danger. lt` Gernluny
declared war against us, or it' Itussill
attacked llldia, we should not hesitate
i`or ll moment over thc cost. We
should llrltlerstallll that let the cost but
what it would, it must be borll,

our services and our lllil-
lions freely; but then it would be too
late.
Yet, it' we could only see things as

are at war with Germany now. For

have been at war; it is bloodless war,
