Premier Peters was the first and occupied the time of the meeting for upwards of half an hour. His speech was remarkable for what it did not contain in regard to the financial and other vital eres. Mr. MeLean followed in a speech in which he exposed administration of the Peters combination | and pointed out the reforms promised by the Leader of the Opposition and his fol- lowers. Mr. McLean was well received. Mr. Cummiskey spoke next, referring to some purely loca! matters and claiming that the Government had practiced grest economy. His remarks fell flat. Mr. McCourt was the last speaker. He spoke on the public accounts and exposed speaker vigorous the ma!- the boodling without tender that was ,carried on inthe Public Works Department. The misman- agement in other departments of the public service was also vigorously exposed, and a strong plea was putin for reduced fares on the Southport ferry. It wae Claimed that the fares collected should not exceed the cost of operating the ferry. As it now is the people on the South side are taxed each time they cross to keep up ferries in other par's of the province. Mr McCourt was given an_ excellent hearing. The Opposition candidates are highly pleased with the treatment they received, and the prospects of st: ong support visible on all sides. oo ne EMBERANCE’ — Six,—I see in a recent number of the Pat- toem, cent during this week. I would | simply ask the electors of Souris who it was that formed the posse that headed a band of Tory roughs from the head of Souris, which pelted the late Hon. Edward Whelan with stones and mud while de- livering a epeech at that place? I would also like to ask whose ancestory it was that kept poor old Angus MeInto hb | on the Georgetown limits for four or five years in tbe latter end of his life? Perhaps there are sowe living at Naufrage yet who know who it was. It would be well tor the — electors of the Second District as well as the First, to know who it was that sent the soldiers and constables to the North Side toimprison and shoot them, if they could see them, for putting a poor man called Haney back in his house after being turned out in the snow in the dead of winter with @ wife and twelve small children. Perhaps there are some yet living that were in the scrape. The writer remembers it well. There are aleo some yet living in Tracadie, Pisquid, Scotch Fort, Johnston’s River and all along the line ‘who remember it, and just now is the time to govein them— eelves accordingly. Loxpox, July 12—The Sunday Times publishes a report of an interview with Premier Sedden, of New Zealand, in which he is quoted as saving that the federal colonies of Canada, the colonies of Aus— | tralia, New Zealand, Cape of Good Hope and Newfoundlaad should be represented in the Imperial Parliament. The seif governing colonies, Mr. Sedden declared, contained ten millions of inhabitants, or one-fifth the population of Great Britain and her colonies, and these ten mulliong are not the least important. He urged the holding of a consultative council to discuss the quert ons ot defence and the trade and foreign affairs of the colonies which were more important now than they had ever been before. Loxpon, July 12.—The visit on Saturday to Hawarden of Sir Wilfrid Lanrier, Mr. R. J. Sedden and Mr. George H. Reid, prime ministers respectively of Canada, New Zea'and and New South Wales. was a great success, The premiers were much impressed by Mr. G'adstone’s mental alert- ness and physical vigor, and also by his | magnetism and charm of manner. They declare it is no wonder that he exercised such influence over his countrymen. The conversation was informal and fami'iar. The visitors were engrossed by Mr. Glad- ston’s vivacious recital of reminiscences of colonial affairs sixty-two years ago, when he was appointed under-secretary of state for the colonies. Several group photo- graphs of Mr. Gladsione and his visitors were taken. Physical strength and energy contr bute to strength of character, sn] both may be had by taking Hood’s Sarsaparilla.
