PAGE I IONDAN OCT. ii. 155'! :Potato Board Plebiscile There has been little interest shown in the forthcoming plebiscite on the continuance of the Potato Marketing Board. This is not I desirable attitude regardless of the views one may hold on the limited functions the Board now performs. The Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Mr. tfullen, in a statement'in Satur- day's tiuardian points out that the plebiscite has been called in ac- cordance with the provisions of the Marketing Act and that it has not been specifically-requested by any petson or group of persons. He cites Inc advantages at-curing from the agreed charge freight rate on potato shipments from this Prov- ince to Montreal, and states that the abolition of the Board could well mean the abolition of this ngroomcrit. also that it might not be possible to secure a support price from the Federal Government if we have no Board to administer such a program. These matters are important, anti should be considered seriously by our farmers. Such organizations as our Federation of Agriculture and Pt'oduce.rs' Association should be in a position to discuss the merits of the issue, and it is to be hoped they will do so before the vote is taken on October 30, We shall not tvrrsunw to loist our own. views upon them, but we think that apathy in a matter of this kind is the poorest policy to pursue. This in a free country. but we do nothing to mppnrt the democratic rights we enjoy by abstaining from exercising its privileges. Plebiscitea are held for the purpose of obtaining public opinion -- in this case the opinion of those chiefly concerned in our potato industry. The pros and cons of the issue should be freely dia- mssed if any worthwhile decision is to be reached. Chronic Complatner Malcolm Muggeridge's harsh criticism of the monarchy and of the Queen and her advisers, cott- tained in an article published in an American magazine, ought not to be taken too seriously. It is even less noteworthy than that expressed by the publicity-seeking lord Al- trlnchnm a few weeks ago. It in to be deplored, of course, for it was an nliilvition of exceedingly bad man- ners, coming as it did on the eve of the Queen's visit to Washington. The simple fact is that Mr. llttgtzeridge has spent his adult life and his not inconsiderable utlents tor itm-clive in maligning almost merynne he could think of who lmpponr-d to hold it position of public uwpnnsibility. But they do indicate that the Government in mindful of its responsibility in this field, a fact which will go far to dampen the ardour of those opposition critics who may be inclined to resort to the wearisome charge that "Tory times are hard times". If there ever was any truth in that charge, it was probably greatly exaggerated. It is to the credit of Mr. Starr that he is doing his best to show that in the future there will be no justifi- cation for it at all. Better Than Satellites The Russians may have been the first to launch an earth satellite and they may even be the first to make a landing on the moon. But when it comes to doing something really useful for the human race, they are out-classed by a small group of medical geasearchers at the Point Edward Hospital in Syd- ney. Nova Scotia. This is indicated in a report from "Science Service" which says that the researchers have developed I new cough remedy called Tessalon - which is much more effective than codeine, which hitherto has been the standard medicine. The new remedy was tested on persons wh were made to cough by artificial means. One group was given co- deine an hour before the test, while another group was given iessalon. Teaaalon stopped 80 per cent of the coughing, while codeine stopped only 50 per cent. The medicine used in the tests was supplied, by the Ciba Company of Canada, Toronto. Thus, a Maritime hospital can claim to have done something im-' portant in medical research and a thousand times more beneficial than the launching of I Intelllte.
