I do not advecate an ela- borate scientific education, because this can in the nature of things, be attained by a very few people but an education which places general principles before us clearly, and supplies the power to avoid disaster or to counteract it. is within the reach of almost everyone.” Is 't not worth while for the enter- prising portion of our people, our citizens and good farmers, our philanthrophists and capitalists, to meet and consult to- gether, to see what might be done to at once start this industry upon a firmer basis? Complaint is made on all sides that female help is not available, and that while our farmers wives are over- werked, our girls are taking the ‘“boats” for the States, Since better methods of dairying will prove more profitable, our farmers could afford to pay good wages to these girls if the latter were competent fo undertake the dairy work, and do it scientifically and well. Why not then edacate our girls, and at once give them employment that will keep them? at home, and relieve our dairy- women from the undue work falling to them while improving our butter pro- duct generally, and to the extent of pay- ing this extra cost to the farmer? > o> ae am New Steamship Line for St. John. Seneral Pendergrast, the new Goveraor- General of Cuba, has had a brief interview with the King, and he says that he will start for Havana by the next mail steamer if he can get ready, or at the latest on November 10th. General Pendergrast says he thinks a liberal and conciliatory policy, humoring colonial ideas and free speech, can pacify the irritation developed by Gen- eral Blanco’s stupid resistance to the per- fectly loyal aspirations of the Ouban Liberals. He admitted the necessity of a tariff reform, but was reserved as to the extent he censidered feasible for them He obtained from Senor Sagasta the im- mediate release of the Cuban journalists who arrived by the last steamer under custody, by order ef General Blanco. and he seemed well-disposed to restore to liberty all Cubans detained in the Kuro- pean possesssions of Spain and in Ceuta. > oa + Personal.
