Most of the Oppositian journals, when declaiming about the public debt, ent concerning the fact that $109,000,000 are sil- was the amount due by the Provinces and assumed by the Dominion at the time of the union. They are silent, too, about the fact that $33,000,000 were aiNed to the pablie debt while the Grits were in power. Moreover, they fail to point out that the $62,000,000 expended upon the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the $44,000,000 er- pended upon the Intercolonial Railway, and the $36,000,000 expended in the con- struction of canals, are in the nature of inveatments yielding direct and indirect advantages to Canada, the value of which is incalculable. In point of fact every dollar added to the public debt since the Liberal!-Conser- vative Government atta'ned to power is re- presented in the public works of the coun- try. While Sir Richar 1 Cartwright Finance Minister, there wa; a series of an- was nual deficits on current account, to meet which additions were made to the public delt. But since the advent of the Liberal- Conservatives the deficits of some years have been met, and more than met, by the surpluses of other years. ————_ THE GUARDIAN AND THE TARIFF ISSUE. We do not at all complain about the Guardian’s partial and misleading quo- tations from Tae Examiver’s courteous replies to its questions. Such tactics con- vey to the discriminating mind the idea that the advocate resorting to them and to the use of words I:ke “donkey,” “ sophistry,” “whines,” etc., is either of weak intellect or has a weak case. The first hypothesis cannot, of course, be as- sumed in respect to the Guardian; and, therefore, the public are forced to the con- clusion that that highiy intelligent journal has which cannot be maintained in fair and reasonable «rgu- As this is the rght conclusion— the conclusion that Tuz Examiner desires the people to draw—the Guardian’s man- ner of discussion pleases us well, and we taken up a cause ment. shal] proceed to answer its third question: “Since Protection lowers the price of goods, why de the manufacturers want free trade in the materials they import?” It is to be remembered that the opera- tion of protection in lowering prices is in- direct. A correspondent of Tue Examiner brought forward a case;%:ve-terday, in which the price of ceriain guods has been reduced more thanahalf asa result of the 35 per cent. duty impozed on the same class of goods manufaciurel giving the home manufacturers encouragc- mentto extend their business, enlarge their output and compete with each other, The benefit resulting to pa-chasers of these goods is very great and very tangible, even though it was brought about in an indi- rect way, through the operation of the tariff. used by manufacturers comes directly out abroad, thus But a tax upon the raw materials of the manufacturers’ pockets, and there is nothing directly or indirectly. to be gain- ed by it, while it may result in the down- fail of many factories and a consequent loss to There are a0 means of avoiding it,and no means of get- ting it back again except by adding it to the prices which the consumers pay. In this fact we have the reason why manu- facturers want free raw materials and why al! consumers cf home manufactured articles are interested in having free raw materials. That is, we venture to say, the reason why Mr. Laurier will find the manu- facturers and the consumers alike arrayed against his ‘a,owed policy of taxing raw -maateria!s. -—_————_3-@ree —The Watchman calls attention to de lay “with respect to the vacant seat in the Peters Government,” and asks: “What have the Irish supporters of Mr. Fred. Peters and Mr. Arthur Peters t»> say about this treatment of Mr. McLaughlan ?” It is suggested that the delay is due to a belief that Mr. McLaughlan is not a man to tamely “knuckle down” to the auto- cratic Premier. ———— 2 o <i... 100 pieces Flannellette yet in stock, the country. | appe | the east will ere long be : :. rside and Charlotte- his. »>who trains, | is that members | DAILY — ' NOTES AND) COMMENTS. —The people of Newfoun ila: d are te ginning to think whether they had bi ter seek admission into the Dominion of Canada or go back t> the po Some pe! con tion of a propose the ! } crown Colony. ‘ } adecice comm.ssion to upon the best cau. e to be pursue I. Sixn,—In reply to “Shareholder,” that appeared in the Weekly Patr‘ot of the Lith inst., { may state that no a-sociation and the name and title of “The New Perth Cheese Factory Co.” is or has been in ex- istence in New Perth, so that the company cf which he is a shareholder only exists in the diseased imagination of the writer in Thursday’s issue. In regard to “The New Perth Dairying Company,” by the Act of Incorporat'on the annual meeting takes place on the {third Tuesday of January in each year. [he-e meetings have been advertised i the Patriot and Examiner by John Hamil- ton, Esq., secretary, with the accuracy and punctuality for which that gentleman is distinguished; and if “Shareholder” neither reads the Patriot nor Tue Exam tyer, he must be a remnant of the “Dark Ages.” Notwithstanding that the day of the an- nual meeting last year was very stormy, a considerable number of shareholders as- semb'el at the schoolhcuse according t After the meeting was organiz*d it was deemed advisable to adjourn to meet again the same cvening at the resi- denee of Mr. Hamilton, whe re more Corm- notice. fort and greater convenience would be ol- tained, the meeting being reorganize@@™At Mr. Hamilton’>. A statement of the finan- operations of the company for the prece.’s ing year to the most minute details, was sulmitted to the assembled shareholders, an was adopted by a unanimous vote. If “Shareholder” will look over the last issue of the Patriot or Examiner, he will find that the aunual meeting will take place at the factory, New Perth, on Tues day the lth inst. at 2 p. m. Should he deem it advisable to attend, he will obtain all the information relative to the operations of the Company (that is if he is entitled to a voice in the delibera- tiens of its members), But I would most respectfully request that he wiil come with an intellect unclonded, and not so mixed as it evidently was when he penned his communication, as appeared in the Patriot of the 10th inst., and also that he will make no attempt to “doctor ” our charter, and T can assure him that we will, fur his personal and special bencfit. spare no trouble or inconvenience in making the financial statement for the present year 20 plain that a mind of the meanest capacity can understand it. Cyrus Saar. New Perth, Jan. 11, 1895. ——————l-oeo THE IRISU PARTY. In the course of a recent interview, Timothy Healy, anti-Parnellite M. P. for North Louth, emphatically denied that he intended to found a third Irish party or to oppose the re-election of Justin McCarthy or other national leaders. He further said that he was only trying to prevent the as- sertion of a calamitous individual domina- tion ofthe party, which denied the the right of criticism and insisted upon cunmitting the party, without prior consul- tation, to movements which after- wards it was too late to repudi- ate. He would persist in opposing every adventurous policy put for- ward as sanctioned by the whole party when it cnly emanated from individuals anthorized to spezk in the name of the party. He favored the greatest latitude wherein individual pronouncements were personal opinions. Healy concluded by declaring that he had always supported, and would continue to support, Mr. Me- Carthy’: chairmanship of the anti-Parnel- jite section of the party and would cor- dially resist any attempt to defeat the gov- ernment on the address in reply to the Queen’s speech at the opening of the com- ing session of parliament. —_—_—— New Haver, Jan. 9.—Ata meeting of ihe local board of health, held last evening, it was decided to give anti-toxine an offi- rial test in eases of diphtheria in this tity.
