oie Ce ee Be, MO tcl Potato Bug Remedies. Mirror and Farmer—.—‘‘ He lives in a} town near by and raises good potatoes, and this, is the story he told us July 3rd: ** T cut potatoes in thin slices and rulled | them in Paris green and put the pieces in old pans or boxes and set them out in the! yp, perer’s,(Cuuvrcn or ENGLAND)—Rochford field among my potatoes, as soon as they | can be seen. I kept the pan supplied with this bait and the result is astonishing. | Sometimes the slices will be all eaten up| and the bugs wiil be three or four deep all over the pans ur boxes. I have this season kept these bug killers in my field until now, and I have done nothing else to kill the bugs, and I have now no slugs and can find but few eggs. Have practised this method two years. It works well, it saves time and labor; it kills thousands of them. If everybody would practise this method we} would soon have less potato bugs.” If potato raisers were compelled to put this method in practice both spring and fall the immigrants from Celorado would soon be scarce. | The Toronto (lobe says: ‘ It appears | from experiments that a heaping teaspoon- | ful of Paris green to 12 quarts of water is | just as certain to destroy the potato beetle | as a larger quantity. But one pound of the poison m \rad witb "heed ‘aster may | be applieéd by the han4, as it 15° peovdu by | recpeated tests that no bad results follow | taking it in the bare hand when thus) mixed. The plaster is worth to the crop| all the labor and expense.” _- The Irish National Exhibition is to be opened in Dublin on the 15th inst. The fair is to be held in the historically famous Rotunda, of which an interesting descrip- tion is given by a Dublin e¢ reespondent. | The ‘‘ Round Room” (from which the) whole pile takes its name), and the ad- | jacent apartments have witnessed many | memorable assemblies, and have been the} theatres of many scenes of which Irish | history takes account. In the Rotunda proper sat the great coavention of the lrish volunteers in November, 1783, the edject of which was to procure a reform of the Irish Parliament. This convention, of which one of the leading spirits was, curiously enough, an Englishman—the Earl of Bristol, who then happened to be the Protestant bishop of Derry—drew up a Reform bill and sent it by a deputation of delegates to the House of Commons. The House refused to receive it, on the ground that it was not to be dictated to by an armed association, and soon afterward the convention, whose counsels, if they had been adopted, would probably have saved the freedom of Ireland, adjourned sine die. During the agitation for Catholic emancipation, the Round Room was almost constantly used as a meeting place, and among those who thronged its platform to assist that agitation were a large number of nfluential Protestant gentlemen whose names, in consequence, are still held in high respect throughout Ireland. In the repeal era, again, many great repeal meet- ings took place within its walls; and on one occasion O'Connell held there one of his levees, at which he received, in almost regal style, representatives of every sec tion of the country. There, too, “the ’82 Club” held its soirees, 30 or 40 years ago— reunions, which, indeed, ¢@id not effect much practical good for the cause of Irish nationality, but which, at least, by the spectacle they afforded of green and gold uniforms, and by the inspiring speeches delivered at them, brought vividly to the public mind the era of legislative indepen- dence, and thus fired the national enthusi- asta in the cause of repeal. -—_ Several changes are being made in the House of Commons chamber. Owing to the addition of five members of the House it became necessary to provide extra seat- ing accommodation. In order to do so the two side entrances to the right and left of the speaker's chair are being closed up and the passages used to place the extra desks in. By this means room will be provided for eight extra desks, the number wanted being five. The twoentrances thus closed will be replaced by a wide entrance behind the Speaker’s chair. A later despatch from London says that the ‘‘Mosel” is full of water and will prove a total wreck. The mails and specie have been safely landed and the majority of passengers have gone to Falmouth Lighters have gone to the wreck to save the cargo. =.
