nndth year of its more or less civili-
zed history, and at that time the
King of Denmark granted the Ice-
landers a. brand new constitution
which is just one year the junior of
the union compact between Prince Ed-
ward Island and Canada.
Since then the Icelanders have been
moving for larger independence. l`.1n-
mark some years ago made the large
concession that no law concerning
Iceland .should take effect there un-
less passed or ratified by the Parlia-
ment of Iceland. But a general elec-
‘tion in the island decided that Ice-
land ought to be n. wholly indepen-
dent’ Kingdom under a common Sov-
ereign with Denmark. This demand
is still maintained, although it finds
little support in the Danish Parlia-
ment, and the crisis has become
acute. Tho example of Norway in
separating from-Sweden is having, its
effect on the Icelandic mind.
Many Icelanders have come to Can-
ada and settled in the Nofrthwesb,and
this fact* increases Canadian interest
in the island of the Far North. A-
part from this there is alcsson for
the Canadian Government in the Ice-
landic crisis. The lesson is ‘that n
small community, if only bc-
cause of ifu smallucss is even
more je-alofus of its iindoubtcd
rights, and more sensitive to such
injustice as that from which Prince
Edward Island has long suffered and
is still suffering, than is a larger
