On Monday evening there were sent to the pmoeting of the Natural History Society a number of specimens of a small insect which is at present destroying a grain-field on the Stock Farm This insect is the common grain aphis (Siphon phora avene) which did so much damage to grain in some sections of the United States last year. The eggs of this insect remain on winter wheat, or on native grasses, over winter, aud in the spring are hatched out into wingless females of extraordinary fecundity. A single individual will produce in twenty days 2,000,000 of its kiad. In June, or earlier, winged females are produced which migrate from one district to another and spread the pest all over the country. In the: fall perfect males and females appear, which establish the annual {perpetuity of the species. It is the pecu- \ liarity of all aphides, or plant lice, that roens summer the females produce young directly by a species of budding in their iuterior, without going through the slow process of laying eggs and waiting for them to hatch, hence its enormous rapidity of multiplication*. In 1861 this insect did much damage in > “ This is true Liberty, when Free Born Men, having to advise the Public, may speak free.”—Evxririvzs. } Ws ; [(rADPEOTTeT ) > i’ : NN” r r f(ARLOTTETOWN, P. It did not appear again in numbers in the United States till last year, and we seem likely to have our turn of it this year. No artificial means have ever devised for its destruction, but beneficent nature has provided means to check the ravages of such a scourge to vege- tation. Various insects devour it, but a minute winged insect, called by the learn- ed Aphidius Granariaphis acts as a parasite to the plant-louse laying its eggs and rear- ing its young in its body, and destroys it in greater numbers than anything else. This fine weather is very favor- able to the multiplication of the parasites and if it continues we may hope soon to see the grains plant-lice gradually disappear from the fields. A good thunder shower would do much to stop their migrations and save the country from a general attack. by sucking the jaice of the plants and thus preventing the developmont of the grain.
