S500 Scholarship I-‘or Every IIIgh, School And College Student To get something of an 1&3 of the social significance of this ter- rible expenditure iook at it in terms of the costs of educating our youth We have 1,208,227 young people iu colleges, junior colleges, universities. , trade schools, night schools, and other IIISZIILIIIOIIS above high school grade, and 6,435,704 in high schools. These figures include both public rind private institutions. The four billions spent for liquor last year. would have provided n $500 scholar- ship for every one of them, and there would still have been re- maining $200,000,000 for other edu- cational projects. $400 Annual Income For Ten Mil- lion Unemployed Exact figures on unemployment are hard to get, but ten million seems a reasonable estimate, in- eluding some who are on some form of relief. The four billons spent for liquor would provide an income of 00 per year for every one of these. We complain a good deal a- bout the costs of relief, but thus far little complaint has been reg- istered concerning the costs of the liquor business which puts so many men and women Oil relief. $4.000 Home For pne Million Families Four thousand dollars would build a much better hcme than a vast number of the American working men live in. and yet this liquor bill would build a four thousand dollar home for each of one mil- lion families. Slx Million Dollar Endowment For 626 Colleges ‘There are six hundred and twenty-six colleges and universities in the United States, of recognized academic standing. A very large number of them are face to lace with a critical financial DT-r At least one hundred of tiiein may be compelled to go out of business in the next five years. In some cases it would cost no more than a quarter of n, million to save them. But if we could use the na- ton‘s expenditures for alcohol for these institutions, we could give every one of them an endowment of $6,000,000, which would guarantee its work for all the years to come, and there would be $244,000,000 left over with which to endow chairs c.i the faculties.
