N.S., who last year was the winner of the greatest number of heats in the Maritime: -77. and finished sixth place am- ong all the drivers in the U.s.T.A making 200 or more starts. This year he is top heat winner with 50 to his credit. 1-iis percentage is .390. Just knocking at the door 15 Frank ilfoAlduff of tAiberton, P.E.f.. who has wandered far afield the last several years, doing only ii, limited amount of racing in the Marltimes. This year he made more starts than usual here and ended up with a percentage of .393. The horses he campaigned in the Maritlmesdncluded Pat D. 2.08 3-5 and Miss Eloise 2.12 4-5 and he also gave Campbell's Buddy his record of 2.13 at Woodstock. The list of drivers that won hon- ors the past season could be very greatly extended because so many of them drove spectacular races and finishes that had to be photo- cd for the judges to arrive at a de- cision. Then, too. there were quite a number of drivers with less than 56 stars whose percentage of wins and places was quite good and sev- trsl of these raced in the United states to further add to their string of vicwries. Joe O'Brien, who last season was among the top winners in the United States, this season ends in tenth place mainly because of hard luck happenings to his stable. Mahlon Hanover that he cave a record of 2.04 to last year as a two-year-old and during the winter months was top favorite to win the Hambletonian. richest trot- tiiig stake in the world. developed blindness but not before he had taken a record of 2.06 over a half mile track and looked good. Joe ended up the season as the big- gest dash wiruier at the Western Harness meet at Hollywood. Cal. a few weeks ago with 18 firsts. Part- icularly pleasing to his many three two-year-oids in the 2.10 list at that meeting. to the great success that has come to Earle Avery, formerly of Wood- stock. and well known throughout the Marltimes as a trainer driver. In the United States he was leading driver at one big night racing meet and was well up in two others. Earle has won victor- has with trotters and pscers bred at Pieasantdsle Farm where Watchim 2.08 and Calumet Fingo 2.04 are in the stud, giving several of these iecords better than 2.10. Frank McAIdnff was one of the loading percentage drivers at Fox- horo and a great favorite with the sneculators. In fourteen starts he won five firsts. three seconds. and three thirds. twice with Pat D., twice with Miss Eloise, giving her a trotting record of 2.12 and once vitli Campbell's Buddy. Ileber M. Sweeney. who through the years has owned many of the fastest pacers in the Marltlmes in- cluding the great Toll Gate 2.00- 3-4, accompanied Earle semple in his trek to the U. S. A. taking with him Hedgewood Chief 4, 2.06 2-5. Ileber was quite pleased with the way this horse raced both before going away and on his return home We started 29 times. was in the money 25 times and was only beat- on inches in 2.06 at Roosevelt Raceway. Another Maritimer who raced st Foxboro was Frank Daniels, who won ith the pacer Aubrey Bud- long a 2.11 2-5 and had other successes. In the province of Quebec Louis Praught has been going quite strong and we noticed his name- frequently heading summaries with trotters and pacers. Last year he was one of the leading drivers there. Dean Gallon was bought from the Johnny Simp- son stable and had trotted a mile over Roosevelt Raceway in 2.11. H: was sought after by several part- leg but Earle got him. Patchen Volo II had no record in 1950 but we understand from Earle that he took his present mark at Roosevelt. Dr. George Bbhop arrived home just recently with the three-year- cld pacer Gahagan by Brown Prince 2.00, darn, Alegra by Grat- tan McKinney. This horse has trained up to miles in 2.10 and was highly recommended by such a good authority as trainer Claire Wolverton of Indianapolis. the man who came here many years ago - I believe it was in 1912 - brought to Halifax the famous pac- er Frank Patch for Adams and Mitchell. Myron MacArthur is contribut- ing to the new speed with the four- year-old pacer Real Fingo by Cal- umet Fingo 2.04 and Cmdr. George H. Buntain was the high bidder on the yearling colt Suffolk Chief by Chief Abbedale 2.00 at Lexing- ton. Ky. A pacer that has shown quite a bit of class is Essa 4, 2.12 by His Majesty 1.59 1-2, that was purchased at Yonkers Raceway for Mrs. James Poulton by her train- er. Len 0'Meara.
