MARKETING out that even as late as 1925 the i railways moved grain at less than these rates and that they have never been able to prove that they are losing money on our grain business. The real problem lies not in the rates but in the fact that cars must be re from the Lake In spite of the importance of! 74 production in this province mar- keting nevertheless continues to be one of our most urgent and repidiy developing problems. Agricultural authorities the world over are recognizing the impor tance of systematic and orderly marketing and the necessity of the type of quality control which will guarantee not only maxi- _™mum returns to the prdduéer but . also protection te the consumer. Continually we are asked the question, ‘““Why does not Prince Edward Island grow such and such?"’ The obvious ap- pears fo be that there is point in growing anything # there is no way to provide prospec- tive buyers with a uniform sup- ply and growers with an assured outlet. Recent developments in the potato industry point to the necessity of much firmer control in packaging, grading and of qual- ity. ; With these thoughts in mind, we believe that the time has ar- rived when a provincial market- ing service employing a compe- tent marketing director should be established as a division of Goy- ernment in this province. Such a service could give needed direc-' tion in the organizing of market-' ing and in encouraging practices which would improve the esteem of Island products no ‘matter where they are offered. As an example of what might be done by such a’ service we would point out the peed for a! survey or analysis of the differ-| em markets ie which Prince Ed-~ { lite}. sts the existence ith have not been) ‘Finance survey ig to be carried a out, this is a matter on which we have made recommendations | jim the past. - | It is also noted that our re. commendations covering bursar- | jes to students attending the Nova Scotia Agricultural College | jhas been acted upon.
