God Save the King brought' the proceed- ings to a close, ill the most exciting trips ever taken on the Grand River was that on Saturday afte H0011. in which a number of ladies and gentlemen participated on the invitation of J. G. McLeod, Esq., the popular agent for the N. A. Assurance Co. "The com- pany boarded the steam-yacht 'owned by Capt. Knight of Scuris, and started Excursion ar Bn1nsn'rowN.-One of 1' from Brightown wharf about th r» e o’clock upon a trip which everyone on board w ~remember for years to gouw. The wind being favorable and the water perfectly smooth the speedy liitle craft conveyed the tourists to Annandale wharf a Annandale, where they were met by a ,number of the good folk of that lively little village, and a picnic was held on the beach. Afterseveral kinds of amusement were indulged in and the visitors all served with lunch, the pleasure seekers again embarked for the return trip. Cheers were given on board the yacht for the good people ef Annandale, while those on shore gave three hearty cheers for their distinguished visitors. By the time the yacht got fairly underway, the shades ' of night were falling and the captain not _bein`g familar with the winding channel of the river, charge of the ship to Messrs. H. McDonald and D. McKay, who acted las engineer and wheel- man on this memorable occasion. These gentleman expressed themselves as being quite competent to steer the ship safely to port under any circumstance; shortly. after-night drew its dark- curtain o’er the water, the yacht ran aground on one of those dangerous sand-bars for which this riveris noted, striking with -such force that Mr. McLeod and a young lady who were sitting in the stern of the boat were thrown overboard; but as the water was only a few inches in depth they escaped with a slight wetting. The engineer and wbeelman bravely jumped out and did their best endeavors to get tha boat off the bar, but with- out success. It was plainly evident to all on board that something more than human strength was necessary to float the ship. .A flag of distress was then raised in the- hope of signalling some boats, which were engaged in hake-dshing further down the river, but the night being dark no assistance arrived from that quarter. It now dawned upon the minds of all that they would have to remain where they were for the night; so they began to make themselves as comfortable as the circum- stances of the ease would permit. The moon had risen by this time and by shod- ding her bright' light on the water, en. deavored to cheer the hearts of the melancholy mariners. Somebody sug- 'gested story-telling to while away the leaden-footed hours, but before .they agreed on who should start first, for the majority of them were in no pleasant mood for such work, who should appear ‘on the scene but Mr. Andrew Lepere, the ;pilot, who heard the continued whistles ,N of the boat and knowing something must “` be thematter put out in his boat and came, to their rescue. The tide was now rising rapidly, and after a little skilful tact on his part the ship was iioated once more,to ' i d the great Joy of all on board, and arr ve in rt in ood time for all hands to en'o D0 B 1 Y a sweeter night’s repose than they would ,otherwise have spent hadthey remained -stranded on the flats of Grand River all night.-Con. he best.
