10 The Guardian, Charlottetown, Tues, Feb. 4. 1964. SPORTS FRONT By PIUS CALLAGHAN Perk-Up, Saints ST. Dunstan’; Varsity squad has first place 811 I0 0591‘ W‘ the Maritime Intercollegiate Hockey.Conference. Billy .\l1acMillan made sure of this Saturday atlternoon when he scored his half dozen goals to lead Saints to their 8-5 triumph M9, so Mary's squad. It was a big-four-point t.i1-ssloandftli Red and Whiters were able to skate off richer by those our S. mi-Iowever, the locals will need to be in better form when they host St. FX. UNB and St. Thomas. It looked Saturday as through the Red and Whiters took this thing for granted. Had MacMillan had an ‘off day’ think what would bavo happened these four points. These Santarnarians were a deter- mined squad and they refused to be awed by Saints‘ reputation. THIS doesn't mean that we have given up on Saints their tough games ahead. No matter how bad they become, it would be next to impossible to lose to Tech. And that's four points more to add to the total. We think, however, that in their remaining home games. the students from out the road will be ‘up’ for these contests. We are sure that several of the fellows who merely posed as hockey playcrs last Saturday will come through with performances which will be a credit to them. We aren't so they must beat everybody fro ' excellent chance of doing just that if everybody Chances Are Good SAINTS lost tvm games this season and their biggest humil- iation came at Ohatham where the Tommies drubbcd em 9-2. But Jack Kane and his boys must feel that they can will beat those Tommies once they g cm over here. After Dal- housie only lost 4-2 on the weekend at Ohatham and Saints beat D-al in Halifax 6-3 All we are wanting to see is the best effort the Saints can give. If they play to the best of their ability and then lose. then nobody should be the least bit critical. However, if they perform in a fashion similar to last Saturday they could well drop every remaining home game. he ys themselves know how indifferent they were at times in tha-t St. Mary's tussle. Nobody need spell out things for them. Perhaps some were more interested in tile winter car- nival activities than the hockey game. We're not sure do know that something was definitely wrong. Saints should still be able to rise to the occasion and trounce these three visitors this month. The Xaverians must fall first and then the climax should come with the defeat: of UNIB and St. Thomas. How about It Saints? On The Curling Scene OUR congratulations to Roger Clair and his lltontfague rink on winning the provincial schoolboy curling championship and the right to represent this proiince at the Dom-inion champion- ships in Regina later this month. The Montague boys went right through the two-day com- petition without a setback and they came home to Montague to a musing reception. The folks in this King's County town are extremely proud of their champions and well they might be. Now all Prince Edward Islanders will be siolitllv behind them as they head west to fight it out in the Dominion linais. Great going. boys. PRINCE Edward island women curlers are battling this week at Summerside Curling Club to name a provincial champ- ion to_go_ to Edmonton to the Dominion Einals. e crown and some gre and stirring encounters should be witnessed before a champion is crowned. These competitions increase in popularity each year and thc calibre of curling shows a marked improvement. This year's provincial winner should be able to give a mighty good acount of itself at Edmonton in late February. However. before that championship is decided at Surmner- side. you can expect many upsets along the way.
