These to swell with strength and beauty Is the royal task of man; Man’s a king; his throne is duty, Since his work on earth began. Bad and harvest, bloom and vintage— These, like man, are fruits of earth; Stamp’d in day, a heavenly vintage, All from dust receive their birth, Barn and mill, and wine-vat’s treasures, Earthly goods for earthly lives; These are Nature's ancient ple asures These her child from her derives. The bean-raising districts of Western New York State are devastated by bean weevil. Twenty deaths from smallpox are re- ported at Coucharley, Ind., and the pest still rages. : } Arrangements have been perfected by | which 40,000 British treops can be em- | barked for Egypt at a momient’s notice. The captain of the steamship ‘“ Strath- | airlie ” hasbeen fined $11,550 for bringing an excess of Chinese passengers to San Francisco. Another steamer, the ‘* Bel- gic,” has arrived with a number of cases of smallpox on board, and has gone into qu3rantine. It is now stated that the report of the murder of seven North-West Mounted Policemen by Indians was incorrect, but that three murders were perpetrated by the Indians, the victims being three horse drovers who were coming through from British Columbia with a number of horses. Charles Theaker, a farmer in the town- ship of Glanford, is the owner of a cow which is rather remarkable for her fecun- dity. Within the last two years and tnree months she has had six calves—twins three times running. Her first twins were heifers, and each of them has now a calf. It is reported that Barnum has made an offer to Oscar Wilde for the latter to sit on top of Jumbo and ride in the street pro- cessions. If, instead of Wilde sitting on the elephant, Jumbo were to sit on Wilde, the zesult would be more satisfactory to the people, and it wouldn’t hurt Jumbo much. Owing to the increasing rush of settlers to the North-West, the Minister of the In- terior has telegraphed to Myr. Walsh, Do- minion Land Commissioner, to employ as many guides as may be found necessary to direct immigrants of the more desirable sections of the country, and assist them in selecting homesteads. Prince Bismarck has recovered from his recently reported ill health. He had been gone some days from Berlin, when he sur- prised the Reichstag one day by suddenly appearing before it, looking marvellously well and sun-burned. He was dressed in full regimental uniform, and wore the Star of the Urder of the Black Eagle around his neck. He was on his way to meet the Ex- peror, and, after shaking hands with a few friends, and showing no irritation at the rejection of several Government bills, he left the House with the blandest of smiles playing about his face. The latest use to which electricity har been put is the launching of ships. The new British turret ship ‘* Colossus” was re- leased from her cradle at Portsmouth by the simple touching of a button, which caused an electrical current to knock away the dog-shears, to break a bottle of wine over the ship's nose, and to start up a musical box with ** Rule Britannia.” The vessel, which weighed 4,420 tons and was the heaviest ever launched at the yard, took the water at once without accident. We are, it appears, only at the threshold of dis- covery of the uses of electricity. The Bank of England covers nearly five acres, and includes most of a parish, with the churchyard now known in bank par- lance as ‘* the Garden,” and a very neat little garden it is. Long after it had ceased to be a burial ground, an ancient servant of the bank, of amazing stature, was buried there for safe keeping by request of his friends, who feared that some enterprising museum would go for his skeleton. The bank occupies the site also of the house and garden of Mr. Houblon, its first Gov- ernor, a Hugenot, of exemplary character, whose very wealthy descendants hold the estates he bought near London. The first Deputy-Governor, Mr. Godfrey, nephew of | the unfortunate Sir Edmund Berry God- frey—not Sir Edmondsbury, as it is usually written—a famous magistrate, murdered in the Titus Oates days, was killed at the siege of Namur, whither he had gone on bank business, having insisted on accom- panying William III to the trenches. The bank is guarded by a detachment of the Foot Guards, who take possession about tive o'clock every evening. The officer on guard is allowed a handsome dinner for himself and two friends, with plenty of wine, but the friends have to depart at eleven o'clock. The men do not know who will be on the bank guard, so collusion is impossible. The building has no external windows, and contains acres of vaults. In the day- time it is guarded by its own porters, and by policemen, many of them in plain clothes, who are always on the watch, _ +e Nexvous Exuavstion, and all diseases orang from youthful indiscretions are speodi- iy and radically removed by that wonderful remedy known as Mack's Magnetic Medicine, an advertisement of which appears in another | ceived, at J. | cific Coas } cheap.
